ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

1953 - The Rules Committee of organized baseball restored the sacrifice fly. The rule had not been used since 1939. JUST THOUGHT BOBBY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. BUT, HE PROBABLLY ALREADY KNOWS.

To set the record straight , the sacrifice fly was adopted in 1908. Repealed in 1931 and actully reinstated in 1939 and changed several times before it became a permanent part of the rule book in 1954 and thereafter. The term 'sacrifice fly' originated from the dreaded vinegar fly who would fly into the spider's web as a sacrifice for others flies to recognize and avoid the dangers of the web.Believe it or not.
