VIRGINIA GETS THE #SEED

The Virginia baseball team will be the #1 seeded team in this years 64 team NCAA baseball tournament which begins on Friday.  The Cavs will open tournament play against Navy and the other 2 teams in there regional are East Carolina and St. Johns.  Being the #1 seed doesn't mean anything if you don't go out and back kit up on the field.  The Virginia mens lacrosse team captured the National Championship yesterday beating the Maryland Terrapins yesterday in Baltimore 9-7, hopefully the Virginia baseball team take will to the same this year.  In high school baseball action yesterday both teams from the Central District were eliminated yesterday, Dinwiddie lost to Deep Run 3-0 while Matoaca lost to Mills Godwin 7-2.  It is going to be another very hot and humid day today with temps approaching the upper 90's with heat indexes over 100 so try to stay cool.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA WINN ACC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, SOME WILD FINISHED AT THE RACES

The Virginia baseball team will be heading into the NCAA baseball playoffs on a high note after winning the ACC baseball championship 7-2 over Florida State yesterday.  The Cavs won all 4 of there games in the tournament after dropping 3 straight a week ago to North Carolina.  The field for the NCAA baseball tournament will be announced today.  The 2 baseball teams from the Central District will be in action today in the Central Regional playoffs, Dinwiddie will face Deep Run while Matoaca will face Mills Godwin and all the games will be at The Diamond.  Well it appeared rookie J.R. Hildebrand was set to win the Indianapolis 500 yesterday until he tried pass a slower car coming off of turn 4 on the final lap when he got out of the groove an hit the wall allowing Dan Weldon to come away with the win.  Then at Charlotte last night it appeared Dale Earnhardt Jr. was set end his winless streak only to run out of gas on the last lap allowing Kevin Harvick to come away with the win, Jr. ended up finishing 7th.  It think the only person feeling worst than Jr. this morning is J.R. Hildebrand. I think I am the only person in th family working today, I really don't know why we are working because we are not going to be that busy.  Also I am a bit tired this morning because I haven't slept well the last 3 nights, hopefully I will get out of this sleep rut soon.  MICKEY

The Virginia baseball team started its game with Miami yesterday morning at 11am but the game did not end until last night at about 9:30pm because some pretty intense t-storms that delayed the game.  The Cavs trailed the game when it was halted 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning but when the game resumed the Cavs cam away with a 6-4 win over the Hurricanes.  The Cavs will face North Carolina tonight with the winner advancing to the championship game tomorrow in Durham.  The Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning last night 1-0 in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Bruins got a goal with less the 10 minutes left in the game and held on for the win.  The Bruins will now face the Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley Cup Finals.  The Nationwide Series will qualify this morning and race this afternoon at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and then tomorrow they will run the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte and Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis.  I just want to let everybody know Monday is not a holiday for me, I will be working.  MICKEY

The Virginia baseball teams bats woke up yesterday afternoon in 13-1 win over Wake Forest.  After only scoring 3 runs the last 3 games the Cavalier offense racked up 13 yesterday.  The Cavs are off today before facing Miami tomorrow.  The Tampa Bay Lightning stayed alive in the Eastern Conference Finals last night holding on to beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 and forcing a game 7 in Boston on Friday night.  Its going to feel a bit like summer here in Colonial Heights with highs in the mid 90's for-casted before it cools off for a couple of days with highs in the 80's before returning to the 90's on Sunday and just thinks summer has yet to began.  Down in Georgia tonight Scottie will be graduation from Crawford County High School, maybe Scott can post a graduation photo.  MICKEY

BOSTON 1 WIN AWAY

The Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning last night 3-1 to take 3-2 lead Eastern Conference Finals.  The Lightning scored 1st but didn't score anymore as the Bruins reeled of 3 straight goals en route to the win.  The Vancouver Canucks will be looking to close out the Western Conference Finals tonight in Vancouver.  The Central District baseball tournament gets underway tonight without the Colonials in it again, in game 1 tonight Prince George will face Dinwiddie and in the nightcap it will be Thomas Dale against Matoaca.  The Colonial Heights girls & boys soccer teams will be in tournament action tonight at Matoaca.  I think will go out and catch some of the baseball action tonight and I might even go over and catch some of the Colonials in soccer action as well.  Even though I did run outside again yesterday my allergies didn't seem as bad yesterday, my ear is still clogged up though.  MICKEY

VANCOUVER 1 WIN AWAY FROM PLAYING FOR THE STANLEY CUP

The Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks yesterday afternoon 4-2 to take a 3-1 series and are now just 1 win away from playing for Lord Stanley's Cup.  In the Eastern Conference Finals the Tampa Bay Lightning will be in Boston tonight to face the Bruins in game 5 of there series, the series is tied at 2 games a piece.  I have pretty bad sinus headache this morning, my allergies were really bothering me at the beach this weeken and running and riding my bike outside down there probably didn't help my situation out any.  The Virginia baseball team will open ACC Tournament play at 3pm on Wednesday against Wake Forest, the Cavs will be trying to bounce back after getting swept by North Carolina this past weekend.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA SWEPT BY NORTH CAROLINA

The Virginia baseball team isn't going to be heading into next weeks ACC baseball tournament on a good note after being swept by North Carolina this weekend.  The Virginia offense has picked a bad time of the year to go into a slump heading post season action, the Cavs only scored 3 runs all weekend against North Carolina.  Hopefully they will be able to straighten things out before the ACC tournament starts next week.  The Tampa Bay Lightning evened up the Eastern Conference Finals with the Boston Bruins a 2 games a piece after beating the Bruins yesterday 5-3, the Lightning trailed 3-0 after the 1st period.  Carl Edwards won last night All-Star race in Charlotte and I have to say it was a very ho hum race, no fireworks or really even any close racing for that matter.  If they keep having races like last nights the crowds are going to start dwindling more.  Well I went down to the ocean this morning and took a few sunrise photos but it wasn't the best sunrise for photo taking but I have posted a few of the shots I took this morning.  I also went down to Dunkin Donuts this morning and believe or not they don't put enough chocolate on the donuts down here, at to much and down here not enough. I AM AT THE BEACH, VIRGINIA DROPS ANOTHER

Well after not being at the beach the last several months I have finally mad it back down here and it looks like it is going to be nice weekend here in Kill Devil Hills.  One reason I came down here was to see if my digital scanner would pick up Dare County's new radio system but so far it hasn't so I guess I will make a trip over to Radio Shack to see if there is anybody there that knows what they are doing with this type of scanner.  The Virginia baseball team has picked a bad time to go into a bit of a slump dropping a 2nd straight game to North Carolina last night 2-1 and today the Tar Heels will go for the sweep of the Cavs something which has not been said to often over the last few years.  In the NHL Playoffs last night San Jose beat Vancouver 4-3 and now trail the series 2-1.  Tonight in Charlotte the they will the Nascar All Star Race and I am quite sure there will be some tempers flaring for sure and I think a punch or two might be thrown as well.  Well I guess I better get ready to go for a run.  MICKEY

NORTH CAROLINA SHUTS OUT VIRGINIA, BOSTON TAKES GAME 2

The North Carolina Tar Heels shutout the Virginia Cavaliers last 6-0 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina to take game 1 of there best of 3 weekend series.  The Cavs just couldn't get on track offensively last night and got a pretty good pitching performance from there starter before Carolina scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning en route to the win.  The Cavs will try to rebound in game 2 tonight.  The Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning last night 2-0 to take a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals, I am hoping that the Lightning will rebound.  Well I think I am going to head down to the beach tonight for the weekend, I need some much needed rest & relaxation.  MICKEY

SEASON COMES TO AN END

Well our baseball season came to a crashing end yesterday afternoon losing to Thomas Dale 6-0 at Shepherd Stadium.  In the last 3 games we only had a total of 7 hits ans we only scored 3 in those 3 games and you sure are not going win allot of games scoring 1 run per game.  It seemed that our season took a major hit the week we lost to both Prince George & Matoaca the same week in extra innings and we just could never recover.  In the NHL Playoffs last night Vancouver beat San Jose 7-3 to take a 2-0 series leas in the Western Conference Finals, tonight Boston will be at Tampa Bay in game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals with the series tied at 1-1.  MICKEY

WE ARE GOING TO GIVE IT ANOTHER SHOT TONIGHT

After being rained out the last 2 times we tried to play Thomas Dale at home we will try again tonight at 6pm at Shepherd Stadium.  There is a pretty good chance of rain and the field is already pretty saturated so I think our chance of playing today are about 40%, the filed was under allot of water last night.  If we don't play tonight I really don't when or where we are going to play them because stadium is booked up through Sunday with the Private School State Tournament.  Also Thomas Dales game yesterday with Meadowbrook was rained out and they are going to play that game tomorrow.  The Virginia baseball game with High Point was also rained out and will not be rescheduled, the Cavs will finish out the regular season this weekend at North Carolina.  In the NHL playoffs last night the Bruins evened up there series up with Tampa Bay at 1 game a piece beating the Lightning last night 6-5, the Canucks and Sharks will play game 2 of there series tonight with the Canucks leading the series 1-0.  Well hopefully we will get the game in tonight but I am not to optimistic about it.  MICKEY

YESTERDAYS GAME WASHED OUT

Well yesterdays baseball game was washed out and has tentatively been rescheduled for tomorrow night at 6pm weather permitting.  The weather inst looking to good I have to say for that to happen and because the private school baseball tournament starts Thursday at Shepherd Stadium we don';t have place to play after tomorrow.  Also Thomas Dale has a game today and they don't play today they are going to have to make up 2 games and it looks like there is a pretty good chance of t-storms through Thursday.  The Central District baseball tournament is scheduled to start on Tuesday at Matoaca.  They will  ply game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals tonight in Boston with Tampa Bay leading the series 1-0, in the Western Conference Finals Vancouver leads San Jose 1-0.  Yesterday at work I went up to Fredricksburg for a couple of stops, it wasn't a bad ride but there sure is a whole lot of people up there.  MICKEY

COLONIALS MUST WIN TODAY, VIRGINIA WINS

If the Colonial Heights Colonials baseball team wants to play another game this season it must win tonight at home against Thomas Dale.  It is pretty simple win and your in a 3 way tie for 3rd and 4th place and if we lose our season comes to an end.  Either way tonight will be our final home game of the season so it will also be Senior Night as well.  Also there is a 50/50 chance of rain as well today and with the previous rain we have had over the weekend the field cannot take an more rain before tonights game.  The Virginia baseball team beat Miami yesterday 5-4 taking 2 out of 3 from the Hurricanes, the Cavs will face High Point tomorrow before heading down to North Carolina for it final 3 regular season games of the year.  At Dover yesterday Matt Kenseth won yesterdays Sprint Cup race, Mark Martin finished 2nd.  GO COLONIALS, MICKEY

VIRGINIA TAKES GAME 2, LIGHTNING WIN GAME 1

The Virginia baseball team bounced back from Saturday nights loss to Miami by beating the Hurricanes 3-2 yesterday afternoon.  The Cavs got tremendous pitching performance from Tyler Wilson and held on to knock off the Canes 3-2, the Cavs will try to win the series this today and secure 1st place in there division going into the ACC baseball tournament in 2 weeks.  In the Stanley Cup Playoffs last night the Tampa Bay Lightning took game 1 of there series with the Boston Bruins 5-2, the Lightning dominated the game throughout.  The Western Conference Finals will begin today with San Jose traveling to Vancouver.  Rain washed out qualifying at Dover yesterday so under Nascar to procedures for qualifying they will lineup according to Fridays practice speeds which put Jimmie Johnson on the pole and A.J. Allmendinger on the outside pole and Dale Jr. will start 3rd.  In yesterdays Nationwide race Carl Edwards picked up the win.  We got a pretty big t-storm here in the Heights last night about 5:30pm which dropped about an inch of rain and they are calling for some more storms today.  I don't know how much more rain the stadium can take today if we want to play tomorrow, I would say probaly not to much more.  MICKEY

MICKEY'S PLACE BACK UP AND RUNNING

Well after not being able to post any new material here on Mickey's Place do to maintenance problems with Blogger the company who powers Mickey's Place  I am back up an running.  The last two days haven't been two kind to the Colonial Heights Colonials baseball either dropping a pair of games to Thomas Dale and Matoaca on consecutive days.  On Thursday the Colonials fell to Thomas Dale 5-2 only getting 3 hits and last Matoaca knocked off the Colonials 8-2 and we only had 1 hit in that contest.  With the 2 losses the past 2 days it simply comes down to Mondays makeup game with Thomas Dale at home on whether we make the playoffs or not this year.  If we beat Thomas Dale on Monday there will be a 3 way tie for 3rd place between Colonial Heights, Thomas Dale and Prince George and if we lose the season is simply over.  Hopefully the bats will come back to life on Monday and the Colonials come away with another win forcing a playoff.  The Virginia baseball team fell to Miami last night 6-2, the Cavs gave up 5 runs in the top of the 1st and never were able to recover.  The Cavs will try to even up the series this afternoon.  The Stanley Cup Playoffs resume today with game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals with Tampa Bay traveling to Boston, I think this will be a very good series and I know the Bruins are the favored but I wouldn't count out the Lightning.  The donuts were a little better and Dunkin Donuts this morning but they still had a little to much chocolate on them for my liking.  The will qualify today for tomorrows Sprint Cup race at Dover, Kyle Busch won last nights truck race at Dover.  MICKEY

COLONIALS WIN 13-3, DETROIT FORCES GAME 7

The Colonial Heights Colonials baseball team picked up a much needed win yesterday beating the Meadowbrook Monarchs 13-3 at Shepherd Stadium.  I have to say we didn't play our best game of the season but we did play well enough to win.  With the win yesterday we improved to 10-7 on the season overall and 5-4 in the Central District with 3 games left in the regular season.  We will need to win at least 1 of the next 3 games to finish no worst than a tie for 4th place and if we could win 2 of the 3 games we would finish 3rd in the district. Also in baseball action yesterday the Prince George Royals beat Thomas Dale 7-3.  In the NHL Playoffs yesterday Detroit beat San Jose 3-1 forcing a game 7 in San Jose, after going down 3-0 in the series the Red Wings have battled back to even up the series at 3-3 and I think the Wings are going to win the series now.  Yesterday was not good day at all for my allergies and I very congested for sure this morning, my cheeks are really hurting.  My visit to my Urologist went well yesterday and I don't have to back until next year at this time unless I have another attack.  MICKEY

COLONIALS AT HOME TONIGHT, I AM HEADING BACK TO THE UROLOGIST

If there was a game on our baseball schedule that we pretty much had to win it would be tonight against Meadowbrook.  If we want to make the playoffs this year we need to win tonights game, if we don't win tonight it puts allot of pressure on us in our final 3 games of the season.  Also in the Central District tonight there are a couple of other big baseball as well with Dinwiddie visiting Matoaca ans Thomas Dale traveling to Prince George.  In the NHL playoffs last night Vancouver won there series with Nashville moving on to the Western Conference Finals where they will either face San Jose or Detroit who play game 6 in there series tonight with San Jose leading the series 3-2.  Well I will be heading back to my Urologist later this morning for a check up on my kidney stones, I am hoping that they re in the same spot and haven't grown to much either.  MICKEY

ANOTHER BUSY WEEK FOR THE COLONIALS

Well it is going to be another very busy week for the Colonials baseball team with 3 games in 4 days starting tomorrow night.  The Colonials will be at home tomorrow night against Meadowbrook before hitting the road Thursday at Thomas Dale and traveling to Matoaca on Friday night.  The games tomorrow and Friday will a 6pm start while Thursdays game will start at 5pm.  In the NHL playoffs last night Detroit stayed alive beating San Jose 4-3 in San Jose, the series now heads back to Detroit with the Sharks leading the series 3-2.  Tonight Vancouver will be in Nashville trying to finish of the Predators, the Canucks lead the series 3-2.  I don't know how many days I am going to be able to run outside with pollen as bad as it is, I ran the past 2 days outside in the morning and really paid for it in the afternoon.  Hopefully pollen will start to drop soon because really has been bad.  MICKEY

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, REGAN SMITH UPSETS THE FIELD

I want to wish all the Mothers out there who come by and visit Mickey's Place a very HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, if you are here in the Heights it looks like it could be a bit of a wet day but we do need some rain.  Last night at Darlington Regan Smith picked up his 1st career Sprint Cup win edging out Carl Edwards for the win, Smith team has been qualifying very well all year and have some pretty good runs and finally all the teams hard work paid off last night.  It was a big win for the little guys in the sport since Front Row Motorsports is a 1 car team and they are based in Denver Colorado.  Also last night tempers were flaring again, last week it was Montoya & Newman and this week it was Harvick and Kyle Busch.  This is something that Nascar really needs some bad feelings towards each other, over the last few years there really hasn't been in big rivalry's or big feuds with drivers, back in the hay day of the sport you had some good guys and some bad guys.  The Nashville Predators stayed alive in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last night beating the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 and forcing a game 6 in Nashville, the San Jose Sharks will try to finish off the Detroit Red Wings tonight.  Yesterday was not a good day for my allergies.  MICKEY

TO MUCH CHOCOLATE ON THE DONUTS

Well I made my normal Saturday morning trip over to Dunkin Donuts in Hopewell this morning and I have to say that I almost didn't go but I went anyway and now I wish I didn't go.  They must have had a new donut maker over there this morning because they put to much chocolate on my chocolate donuts, sometimes to much is not good thing and I have say I think this morning was on those times.  Kyle Busch won last nights Nationwide Series race at Darlington, as many races thats he has won on that series they may rename it the Busch Series but thats what it was before it was the Nationwide Series.  Kasey Kahne captured the pole for tonights Sprint Cup race at Darlington edging out Ryan Newman for the top spot.  Well the Eastern Conference Finals are now set after the Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers last night 5-1 and with the win seep the series 4-0 where the will face the Tampa Bay Lightning who swept the Caps 4-0 and I think I will have to root for the Lightning in this series.  In the Western Conference the Detroit Red Wings avoided being swept by San Jose knocking off the Sharks 4-3, the Sharks still lead the series 3-1 and in the other series Vancouver leads Nashville 3-1.  Have a nice weekend.  MICKEY

ANOTHER TOUGH LOSS, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOY

Well I thought Tuesdays loss was a tough one to take, well after last nights game I think I feel even worst.  After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the 1st inning we got 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and 1 more run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 6-2 lead over Matoaca only not to score again the rest of the game.  Matoaca kept chipping away at the lead until the ties at 6-6 and we able to win it in the 8th 11-6.  We simply gave this game away, drop fly balls, wild pitches, and only 1 hit after the 2nd inning.  We beat ourselves last night thats for sure and sometimes I just don't think we don't now how to win ans sometimes I think we have accepted losing but I can tell you I haven't.  I could probably say whole lot more but I think I better keep my mouth shut on the rest of my comments.  Today is Joy Woodfin's birthday HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOY, MICKEY

CAPITALS ELIMINATED. COLONIAL BACK AT HOME TONIGHT

Well I have to say that I didn't see the Tampa Bay Lightning sweeping the Washington Capitals 4-0 before the series started but thats what exactly happened last night when the Lightning beat the Caps 5-3.  The Lightning were pretty much able to keep the high flying Capitals offense pretty much in check the whole series.  It looks like the Lightning will face the Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals because they lead the Flyers 3-0 in there best of 7 series.  The Colonial Heights Colonials baseball team will be back at home tonight against Matoaca at 6pm, the Warriors enter the game in 2nd place in the Central District.  It was in correctly reported hear on Mickey's Place yesterday that Virginia played Miami this weekend when they actually play the Hurricanes next weekend, the Cavs are off the weekend because they are taking there final exams.  I don't about everybody else but my allergies are really bothering me this week.  MICKEY

COLONIALS FALL IN EXTRA INNINGS, CAPS IN BIG TROUBLE

The Colonial Heights Colonials baseball team fell in extra innings last night a Prince George 10-8.  In a game were Prince George jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 4 innings the Colonial fought back pushing 7 runs across the plate in the 5th inning to take a 7-3 lead.  However Prince George wouldn't go quietly getting 1 run in the bottom of the 5th inning and getting 4 more in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 8-7 lead.  The Colonials were able to tie the game in the top of the 7th at 8-8 only to lose the game on 2 run HR in the bottom of the 8th and I have to say that the loss was a pretty tough one take.  The Colonials will be back in action tomorrow night at home against Matoaca.  The Virginia baseball team came to Richmond last night to face the VCU Rams and came away with a 14-3 win over the Rams, next up for the Cavs is a 3 game series with Miami at home this weekend. The Washington Capitals are in big trouble right now after falling last night to Tampa Bay 4-3 and are now down 3-0 in the series and I just don't see the Caps coming back in winning this series.  MICKEY

COLONIALS WILL BE AT PRINCE GEORGE TONIGHT, VIRGINIA AT VCU

The Colonial Heights Colonials baseball  will be on the road tonight at Prince George at 6pm looking to pick up another win over the Royals.  The Royals lost another tough one last night to Matoaca 12-4 in 9 innings, also in the Central District last night Thomas Dale beat Hopewell 12-2.  Tonight in college baseball action the Virginia Cavaliers will be at the Diamond tonight to face the VCU Rams, the Cavs dropped to #2 or #3 in country after last weekends loss at Boston College.  Hopefully the rains will hold off until we can get our games in tonight.  The Washington Capitals need to win tonight at Tampa Bay or I think they are pretty much done, the Caps trail the Lightning 2-0 going into tonights game and if they go down 3-0 I doubt they will be able to recover to win the series.  Last night in the NHL playoffs the Bruins won in OT to take a 2-0 series lead over the Flyers.  MICKEY

CAPS DOWN 2 GAMES TO NONE, VIRGINIA SHUTS OUT BOSTON COLLEGE

The Washington Capitals have dug themselves a big whole in there best of 7 series with the Tampa Bay Lightning after the Lightning beat the Capitals 3-2 in OT to take a 2-0 series lead with the series heading to Tampa for the next 2 games.  I am not saying that the Capitals cant come back and win the series but they are going to have to play better defense if they want to win this series.  The Virginia baseball team shutout Boston College in game 3 of there series in Boston yesterday 4-0, the Cavs will be in Richmond tomorrow night to face VCU weather permitting.  With the win yesterday and Georgia Techs loss the Cavs still have a 2 game lead on the Yellow Jackets and a 3 game lead over Miami a team that they will face at home next weekend.  Well I hope everybody had a good weekend because its time to go back to work.   MICKEY

VIRGINIA LOSES TO BOSTON COLLEGE, CAPS PLAY GAME 2 TODAY

The Virginia baseball team lost yesterday to Boston College yesterday 5-4 in 11 innings in Boston.  The Cavs ties the game up in the later innings at 4-4 only to fall 5-4, the Cavs will look to win the series this afternoon and stay ahead of Georgia Tech with a win this afternoon.  The Washington Capitals will be looking to even up there series with Tampa Bay this afternoon a 1 game a piece, a loss today would really put the Caps up against the wall in trying to win this series.  Kyle Busch picked up another win last night at Richmond keeping Denny Hamlin for sweeping the weekend, Hamlin did finish 2nd and did lead his share of laps.  The Colonial Heights baseball team has two games this week, Tuesday we will be at Prince George and on Thursday we will be at home against Matoaca.  There hasn't been much change in my allergies they are continuing to bother me quite a bit.  I almost forgot to mention today is the 1st day of May.  MICKEY
