REDSKINS FIND A WAY TO LOSE AGAIN
The Washington Redskins lead the Philadelphia Eagles most of the game yesterday but found away to lose again in the end. The Eagles kicked a field goal with 1:48 left to beat the Redskins 27-24, the Skins just don't know how win the close games. The Virginia Cavaliers are looking for a new football coach, the Cavaliers decided to part ways with Al Groh yesterday and have began looking for a new coach. I don't know who the new coach will be but the program really needed a change. The Virginia basketball team will be back in action at home tonight against Penn State in the ACC/BIG 10 Challenge. Speaking of basketball both the CH girls and boys basketball team will open there season on Wednesday night against Matoaca, the boys team will be at home while the girls team will be on the road. Fellow blogger Keith will be out of town this week in Fayetteville, North Carolina for some more government work, at least he didn't have to travel to far. Have a nice day, MICKEY
Survey your support system. Make a list of people you could turn to for advice and hands-on help in a pinch. You’ll probably realize you have more people to rely on for emotional, practical, or financial support than you thought you did. Knowing that they’re there can mitigate the effects of stress and make you feel more resilient.
Plant something. Whether it’s a window box or a row of bulbs, caring for greenery can have a positive effect on your well-being. A recent study put heart-disease patients in a horticultural-therapy class. Immediately after the class, their heart rates were lowered and their moods improved. Gardening can help shift the focus away from the stressors in your life and calm you down.

VIRGINIA TECH PUNNDS VIRGINIA, ECU WINS
The Virginia Cavaliers played well for about a half yesterday before the wheels completely fell off in the 2nd half. The Cavaliers actually trailed just 14-13 in the 3rd quarter before a fumble and the Tech tout was on en route to a 42-13 win. It looks like the Cavaliers will have a new coach next year but the question is going to be. The East Carolina Pirates knocked off the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles yesterday 25-20 and with the win will face the Houston Cougars at home in the CUSA Championship game. I saw them play Houston a few years ago and the Houston QB is very good, but the Houston defense tends to give up allot of points so this game could be a very high scoring affair. Also in the I-AA playoffs yesterday Richmond beat Elon 16-13 and will now face Appalachian State at home next week, William & Mary also won yesterday 37-0 and will face Southern Illinois on the road next week. In high school playoff action yesterday Thomas Dale beat Hermitage 7-0 and will face Oscar Smith next week at home while Petersburg fell to Hanover 42-8. Today in the NFL the Redskins will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles, the Packers have already won this week beating the Lions on Thanksgiving Day. It looks like Keith held on to his lead this week in the Mickey's Place College Football Pick Em Contest, however there was an upset winner this week. I will update the standings later this morning. See the big picture. When obstacles pop up, ask yourself how stressful the situation really is: Will this matter in three months? Three years? For issues with long-term repercussions, write down exactly what you think the problem is or how the situation needs to change. Brainstorm about what you can do to move toward a better outcome, itemize the steps that must be taken, then create a concrete plan of action.

I AM HEADING DOWN TO EAST CAROLINA
Well I am going to be heading down to see the East Pirates face the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi today. It will be the first time that I have been down to ECU since the opening weekend of the college football season. If the Pirates win today they will host CUSA Championship game next week most likely against Houston, if they will get ready for which ever bowl game that they are going to play in. Today in Charlottesville the Virginia Cavaliers will face Virginia Tech in which like will be Coach Groh's last game as the head coach of the Cavaliers, hopefully the Cavaliers will send him out a winner. In the I-AA playoffs today Richmond is at home against Elon and William & Mary is at home as well against Weber State. In high school football playoff action tonight two teams from the Central District will be in action and both of them will be on the road, Thomas Dale will be at Hermitage and Petersburg will be at Hanover. In college basketball action last night the VCU Rams beat Nevada 85-76 to improve to 4-1 overall. It is feels like a winter morning here in Colonial Heights, the temp is 34 and the wind is blowing pretty steady giving us a wind chill in the upper 20's. I am still tired from getting up at 4am yesterday. MICKEY
Manage Stress. Stress is part of life. Managing stress, so it isn’t overwhelming, is critical in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When we are over-stressed, we find reasons to soothe ourselves and, often, we do so with food. Exercising, getting enough sleep and spending down-time alone or with loved ones, are all ways to help diminish the impact of stress on our lives.
To be effective
What is it that makes some people more effective than others? Is it skill, or luck, or secret knowledge?
More than anything else, it is a clear and consistent sense of purpose. When the objective is compelling enough, you will find a workable, effective way to make it happen.
To be effective, you must be effective toward some particular end. Clearly define, visualize and feel the reality of the goal, mentally weaving it into every part of your life.
Focus on why it must be done just as much as you focus on what is to be done. By very definition, an inspired performance requires inspiration.
Purpose provides that inspiration. Actions that clearly resonate with purpose will naturally gravitate toward higher and higher levels of effectiveness.
When it truly means something to you, you'll do it very well. What's even better is that in the achievement that surely comes, you'll find great fulfillment.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
I hope everybody has Happy Thanksgiving and takes time think about what they thankful for. The Virginia basketball team picked up a win last night in Mexico beating Cleveland State 76-65, the Cavaliers trailed actually trailed at the half. Today in the NFL there will be 2 teams holding there annual Thanksgiving Day games, the Dallas Cowboys will be hosting the Oakland Raiders while the Detroit Lions will be playing host to the Green Bay Packers. There is also 1 other NFL game tonight but it is not a traditional Thanksgiving Day game which has the New York Giants visiting Denver to face the Broncos. I now have everybody's picks for this weeks contests with the exception of Andrew and I do not know what his holdup is. Also since we are off at work today we have to go in tomorrow morning at 5am, I am sure I will be very tired tomorrow night. Well again I hope everybody has a Happy Thanksgiving. MICKEY
Live your blessings
It is good to reflect upon thankful thoughts. It is even better to continually put thankfulness into action.
The way to be truly and fully thankful for what you have is to put it to use. Abundance grows more abundant when it is exercised.
Life's great and wonderful blessings are not for hoarding. They are for living.
What's important is not how much or how little you have. What's important is what you do with it.
You won't find richness in the objects of your desire. True richness comes in the living, dynamic expression and fulfillment of those desires.
Be genuinely thankful for your good fortune by applying that good fortune in an authentic, purposeful direction. Make good use of life's goodness, and there is no limit to how valuable it can grow.

Strength Train and Exercise. Strength, cardio and flexibility training are all important to keep bones and heart strong, metabolisms high and bodies free from injury. Find a variety of activities you enjoy and get in one or more (for approximately one hour) at least three times a week. This should include two 20 to 30 minute sessions of strength training weekly. Instead of weight lifting, you can enjoy Yoga and Pilates (both incorporate strength training) as well as other forms of exercise that require muscular strength.

VIRGINIA FALLS TO STANFORD
The Virginia basketball team fell to Stanford last night 57-52 in Cancun, Mexico. The Cavs were down by 1 at the half and took the lead for a while in the 2nd half before Stanford went on the run and held on to win the game. The Cavaliers will face Cleveland State today. It is raining again here in CH this morning but it is suppose to stop later today and it looks like we might get a little sunshine later today. I sure am glad tomorrow is Thanksgiving and that I am going to get a much needed to day off as well, I need the rest. Speaking of work I din't have to go to Virginia Beach yesterday which was fine with me, I had a terrible headache for most of the day. Also down in Georgia yesterday Scottie started his wrestling season with 2 wins. MICKEY
Caffeine
It's always amazing to me to find people struggling with serious anxiety problems who are still drinking a significant amount of caffeine everyday. Since I don't drink caffeine on a regular basis I have no tolerance for it and it literally makes me shake when I do drink it. I can't imagine throwing that in on top of an anxiety problem. If anxiety is the problem, I would eliminate caffeine all together and see if it helps.
For people with mood disorders, caffeine provides a serious rush of energy, but like simple carbohydrates (sugars) you crash when it wears off. This peak and crash pattern is not good for people trying to stabilize mood swings and the crash will exacerbate depressive symptoms.
Sleep. Adequate sleep is highly beneficial to your health as well as your waistline. Those who get seven to eight hours of sleep each night tend to weigh less than individuals who are sleep deprived. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up the same time every morning.

VCU WINS ON THE ROAD, IT WAS A LONG DAY AT WORK YESTERDAY
The VCU Rams improved to 3-1 on the season with 63-52 road win at Hampton last night, the Rams didn't play as well as they did against Oklahoma but they played well enough to get the win. The Virginia basketball team will be back in action tonight against Stanford in a tournament in Cancun, Mexico. The game against the Cardinal will be a tough test for the Cavaliers. Well I have to say it was a very long day at work yesterday, I didn't get home until after 5pm and it rained the entire day and I was on a truck so I got pretty wet. I am probably going to have to go to Virginia Beach today so it could be another pretty long day. I am still pretty sore form playing basketball Sunday night and then last night I bit my tongue eating supper so my PAIN index is still elevated. MICKEY
Fats
The benefits of a low fat diet for fighting weight gain and heart disease have been highly touted. However, many don't realize that limiting your fat intake too severely of healthy fats can result in serious mood changes, irritability and aggression. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish have been found to help stabilize mood swings and decrease stress. "Good fats" burn clean in the bloodstream compared to "bad fats" which clog the arteries and narrow the blood vessels. Good fats include olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocadoes and fish. Exchange that fried chicken for a grilled salmon. Replace a mayonnaise dressing with an olive oil and vinegar splash.
Hydrate. Approximately 65 percent water, our bodies require substantial replenishment of H2O to function properly. Proper hydration flushes toxins, ensures proper digestive and body functions, curbs hunger and helps fight aging. Opt to drink water (you can add lemon, cucumber or a splash of juice for flavor), unsweetened green tea or club soda.

PACKERS BEAR 49ER'S, JOHNSON WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Green Bay Packer picked up another win yesterday knocking off the San Francisco 49ers 30-24, the Packers built a big lead and had to hold on for the win. The redskins didn't fair as well falling to Dallas 7-6, I have to say the Skins had there chances but just could not get the job done in Dallas. Denny Hamlin won yesterdays season finale on the Sprint Cups Series at Homestead in race that had several exchanges between Juan Pablo Montoya and Tony Stewart, Montoya was parked for 2 laps for rought driving. Jimmie Johnson won his 4th straight championship as well yesterday, Mark Martin finished 2nd in the race for the chase. Well it is raining here in Colonial Heights again this morning and it appears that it is going to rain most of the day and there is another pretty good chance of rain on thanksgiving as well. I am bit sore this morning from playing basketball last night, I think I might be getting to old to play full court basketball. MICKEY
Proteins
It is important to eat high quality proteins like chicken, fish, turkey, soy, dairy products and beans. (I am a very big fan of beans. They are usually high in protein, low in fat and high in fiber.) Proteins are made of amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to make neurotransmitters in the brain. These chemicals (like serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and GABA) are the chemicals which antidepressants and anxiolytics (anti-anxiety medications) seek to increase to improve your mood and calm you. Chicken and turkey are also high in tryptophan, which the body also uses to make serotonin, one of the primary neurotransmitters for lifting and calming the mood. Running short on these neurotransmitters results in depression, irritability, difficulty thinking and remembering, insomnia, fatigue and anxiety. Having sufficient stores of these neurotransmitters available to the brain helps it regulate emotions and thinking. Providing your body with the necessary ingredients to manufacture these neurotransmitters is vital for improving your mental health and keeping things in balance.

Complex Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of energy. Your body will burn carbohydrates first before turning to protein or fats. A lack of energy sources in the body will result in the body shutting down and altering activity levels. People who are chronically tired often feel sad and hopeless as a result. To keep your emotions on an even keel it is important to have a slow steady stream of carbohydrates broken down and made available in the bloodstream for energy.
People struggling with depression and/or mood swings often rely heavily on simple carbohydrates (sugars) rather than complex carbohydrates (starches). Simple carbohydrates (candies, table sugar, honey, sodas, fruits, milk products) break down quickly in the bloodstream and hit it with a bang that provides immediate energy. This is why they are preferred by people with depression. However, what goes up must come down, usually with the same speed and intensity. The surge of energy is followed by a crash when the sugar is quickly burned up. This crash exacerbates depression, fatigue, impaired concentration and memory and irritability. However, all simple carbohydrates are not equal. There is a difference between the simplest carbohydrates like table sugar, sodas and candies which are referred to as "empty calories" because they provide so much glucose, an easily broken down form of sugar, and no nutritional value. Compare these with fruits and milk products whose sugars (fructose and galactose respectively) are somewhat harder to break down, enter the bloodstream a bit more gradually and have a somewhat milder crash and provide significant nutrition such as vitamin C and calcium. If you are craving something sweet have an apple or orange rather than a candy bar.
Complex carbohydrates (whole grains, starchy vegetables and beans) are even harder for the body to metabolize and provide and slow, constant stream of fuel for the body's energy demands. This avoids the peaks and crashes of the simple carbohydrates. Whole grains also provide lots of B vitamins which calm and stabilize the mood and help your body metabolize carbohydrates for increased energy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEE
Well today is former blogger Lee Olds 20th birthday, I saw former blogger because I don't think he has posted any comments recently on Mickey's Place, I think he is addicted to Facebook. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEE. It wasn't a good night for the high school football teams in action at the beach last night, First Flight got run over by Whiteville 46-20 while Manteo lost a heart breaker to Plymouth 18-12 in OT. Today there will be three Central District teams in high school playoff action, Thomas Dale will be at L.C. Bird, Dinwiddie will be at Hanover and Petersburg will be at Clover Hill. In college football action today the Virginia Cavaliers will be on the road at Clemson, I think it is going to be a long afternoon for the Cavaliers. The Virginia basketball team will be at home against Oral Roberts today, also tonight in college basketball action the VCU Rams will be at home against Oklahoma. Well Jimmie Johnson will start form the pole in the final race of the season tomorrow at Homestead, Scott Speed will be on the front row with him. MICKEY
THANKSGIVING TIPS
Don't arrive famished. Instead of saving your appetite for the big four o'clock feast, make sure to have a healthy breakfast and a light lunch (such as fruit and yogurt). Starving yourself earlier in the day will just lead to major bingeing — and uncomfortably tight pants — at dinner.
Keep portion size in mind.
Knowing what a serving really looks like will help you to set limits. Some useful visuals to keep in mind: one serving of turkey measures about the size of a deck of cards (tip: white meat has less fat than dark); one serving of stuffing, mashed potatoes, or cranberry sauce looks like half a baseball.
Shift your focus away from the food.
Instead of wondering when it'll be time for seconds, enjoy the company you're in. Get updates on everyone's family or career, bring some pictures of the kids/grandkids to show off, or exchange recipes.

Brain Bruiser
Last Thursday, my aunt Martha forgot her driver's license at home. She was traveling down a one way street in the wrong direction and did not stop at an intersection to let pedestrians go. A policeman was watching her, but did not give her a ticket. Why?

What is the invention that allows you to see through the thickest walls?
Why are Saturday and Sunday so strong?
VIRGINIA WINS AGAIN, I AM TIRED THIS MORNING
The Virginia Cavalier basketball team improved to 2-1 last night with a 79-46 win over Rider, the Cavs lead this game most of the way and pulled away from the Broncos in the 2nd half. The Cavaliers will be at home as well on Saturday against Oral Roberts at the JPJ Arena. I am a bit tired this morning because I didn't sleep very well at all last night, I think I woke up about every 30-40 minuted for some reason. Down at the beach tonight both First Flight and Manteo have 2nd round playoff games at home, First Flight will be at home against Whiteville and Manteo will be at home against Plymouth. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will run there final race of the season this weekend at Homestead, it looks like Jimmie Johnson will win his 4th straight title. Well I hope everybody has a good weekend. Swiss cheese Holy cow: “Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown,” says Michael B. Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Put toe to toe with some of its cheesy counterparts, Swiss is a heavy hitter in the calcium department; layer a slice on a lunchtime sandwich, or stack some on high-fiber crackers.
Get pumped with peppermint.
Try peppermint, recommends Bryan Raudenbush, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology at West Virginia's Wheeling Jesuit University. His research indicates that the smell of peppermint enhances performance and alertness and can reduce fatigue. Try Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm with peppermint oil or chewing a sugar-free peppermint gum.
Always successful
In each and every moment, you are successful at doing something. You take action, and that action successfully brings a result.
Success is not really something you must strive to create, for you are always making it happen. What's important is defining and intending the success you do create so that it is a positive force in your world.
Many people are successful at just barely getting by. Others are successful at bringing pain and dismay into their lives.
Yet the very same skills that succeed at creating mediocrity and despair, can also be used to create rich fulfillment. What's needed is not so much a change in effort as a change in focus.
You truly deserve a great and wonderful life, and you have everything necessary to experience that life. Keep your thoughts focused on your most meaningful desires, and your actions will align with those thoughts.
You're always succeeding at something. Choose now to make it something great.
