RENEGADES WIN ON NTHE ROAD, VCU LOSES AT NEVADA

The Richmond Renegades were trailing 5-3 going into the 3rd period last night but scored 4 unanswered goals to pick up a 7-5 win over the Huntsville Havoc, the Gades will continue there road trip tonight in Knoxville. Also last night in the SPHL there was bench clearing brawl in the game between Columbus & Twin City and I have posted a video of the fight that I got off of YouTube below. The VCU Rams didn't fair as well on the road last night at Nevada falling to the Wolf Pack 71-70. The Virginia Cavaliers will be looking for the 3rd straight ACC win in a row today at N.C. State, I think the Cavs have a good shot at winning this one. The Virginia baseball team came out swinging yesterday knocking off Bucknell 12-0, they will play 2 against Bucknell today. Brian Vickers captured the pole for this weeks Sprint Cup race at the California Speedway. Down in Georgia at the high school wrestling tournament Scottie lost another tough match when his opponent used some type of arm bar move on him, the way Scott described sounded like it was painful. I am very happy to report that the donuts from Wal-Mart were very good this morning and the ones that Sheetz have don't even come close to matching up with donuts from Wal-Mart.  MICKEY

AN AMAZING FACT
Peaches will peel more easily if blanced for a minute in boiling water, then plunged in cold water for a minute to stop the effect of the heat.

Preventing Blisters
To prevent blisters you have to minimize friction on the skin. You can do this by wearing appropriate footwear that fits. Some moisture-wicking socks made from synthetic blends can help reduce friction and moisture on the skin of the feet. Some runners commonly tape their blister-prone toes or heels prior to a run to prevent blisters. While band aids and other tape can be used, many athletes (myself included) often use a small strip of duct tape on these trouble spots. Duct tape stays in place for long runs and the shiny back is slick enough to slide on socks and other skin. One other option is to apply petroleum jelly or talcum power before exercise to reduce friction. I've used this as well, and while it works for shorter runs, it's rather messy and wears away on long runs.

If you have any "hot spots" during activity, it's important to treat them right away to prevent the blister from developing. Try to keep your feet dry or change socks if possible. If you can't stop activity or change shoes, socks, gloves or other gear, your best option is to apply a 2nd skin dressing or moleskin and tape the sensitive area. Another quick and effective treatment is to apply a generous amount of petroleum jelly to the area to reduce friction. You will probably need to reapply often.

If your iron level is low, you may tire easily and not have enough stamina for activity. The best sources of iron are animal products, but plant foods such as fortified breads, cereals, beans and green leafy vegetables also contain iron.

What Causes Blisters?
Blisters typically develop due to friction on the skin. This can occur from the rubbing of clothing or sports equipment on the surface layer of the skin. Over time, continued friction can cause the top layer of skin to separate from the second layer of skin. (See an image of the skin layers).

One warning sign that a blister is about to develop is redness and warmth on the skin called a "hot spot." Next, fluid fills the space between the top two layers of skin to provide protection from continued rubbing. When this happens you will see a blister that looks like a little bubble on the skin.

Most people get blisters on the heels, soles of the feet, and palms of the hands because they rub against shoes, socks or sports equipment. This type of friction, especially in moist, warm conditions, is perfect for blister development.

COLONIALS BASKETBALL SEASONS COME TO AN END, RENEGADES LOSE

Well basketball season ended last night for both the Colonial Heights girls and boys teams at the hands of Petersburg. The CH girls team lost to the Crimson Wave 61-21 while the CH boys team fell to Petersburg 82-42. The top 4 seeds in both girls and boys advanced in Central District. The Richmond Renegades were hammered by Fayetteville last night 7-3, it was a close game for 2 periods before the FireAntz blew out the Gades in the 3rd period. Tonight in college basketball action the Virginia Cavaliers look to win there 2nd straight ACC game when Virginia Tech comes to town, Andrew says Virginia will win. Also tonight Delaware will be at VCU, Delaware has already beat VCU once this year. My PAIN index remains elevated this morning because by left eye is itching like crazy and I don't know why, it is also watering a little as well and I keep rubbing it which is not helping the situation. It looks like it is going to be a cool rainy day here in Colonial Heights. MICKEY

Perception Affects Anger and Stress
Certain events often trigger anger or stress in many people, but the degree of anger or stress that is experienced has to do with how a person perceives and interprets what is happening to them. For example, two people can be cut off in traffic. One person might interpret the gesture as a lack of respect, a threat to physical safety or a hostile gesture, and get angry. Another person may figure that the offending driver may not have seen them, or might be wrapped up in their own thoughts, and let the event roll off their back. In both cases, there was a stimulus, a belief, and a response; the belief, or interpretation, of the stimulus is what led to the different responses.

What Is a Comorbid Condition?
The term "comorbid condition" is a medical term you will run into often when reading about medical studies and multiple chronic conditions. It sounds very serious but what exactly is a comorbid condition?

A comorbid condition refers to one or more diseases or conditions that occur together with the primary condition. Using rheumatoid arthritis as an example -- there are comorbid conditions associated with the disease that are non-articular manifestations (conditions that affect soft tissue rather than joints) occurring with higher frequency than would be expected in the normal population. According to rheumatologist Raymond Federman MD, "These include such conditions as subcutaneous nodules, vasculitis, neuritis, Sjogren's syndrome and Felty's syndrome. Although these conditions are not found in all rheumatoid arthritis patients, when present, they may influence treatment."
Comorbid conditions can include diseases and conditions other than just arthritis-related conditions though -- it can refer to arthritis and diabetes, arthritis and heart disease, arthritis and cancer -- any conditions which occur together.
