STEWART WINS AT CHICAGO, HARVICK LEADS RACE FOR CHASE

Tony Stewart picked a good time to pick up his 1st win of the season yesterday at Chicago holding off Kevin Harvick for the win.  Kevin Harvick is now the points leader with Harvick 2nd, Dale Earnhardt Jr. came in 3rd place yesterday and now is 5th in the standings.  Next week the Nascar Sprint Cup Series heads to New Hampshire.  After today there is a better than 50% chance of rain each day through Friday and it the chance might extend in to Saturday as well.  Well it now appears that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are all now headed to the Pac12 which will its name to the Pac16, however nothing has been made official yet.  Also the SEC is looking to add some more teams as well, stay tuned for more as the conferences turn.  MICKEY

PACKERS & REDSKINS NOW 2-0

The Green Bay Packers shook of a sluggish start yesterday and beat the Carolina Panthers 30-23 bu the Packers defense still gave up over 400 yards passing to Cam Newton.  The Packers need to get defense playing better or it's going to catch up with them soon.  The Washington Redskins got a late filed goal against the Arizona Cardinals and came away with 22-21 and with the win the Skins are now in 1st place by themselves in the NFL East, next week the Redskins will play the Cowboys in Dallas on Monday night.  The 1st race in Nascar's chase was rained out in Chicago and they will try to run the race at Noon today.  The ACC officially added two schools yesterday and with the two additions now has 14 teams, it is still unclear when Syracuse & Pittsburgh will join the conference.  Also it looks like they will add two more schools in the pretty near future.  MICKEY

JOHN HAD THE BEST WEEK BUT THE CHIEF STILL LEADS

Well John had the best week in week 3 of the contest going 17-5 which was 2 games ahead of Scott who who went 15-7 this week.  The Chief continues to lead the contest after week 3 and his lead is 2 games over Andrew, Bobby, Julianne, Murph & John.  The top 17 players in the contest are within 7 games of the lead which I have to say is pretty good.  Erik who was in 2nd place had a bit of a rough week going 9-13 dropping back to 12th place 6 games back.  This upcoming week could be a make or break week for some, there are some pretty tough games.  Here are the updated standings and next weeks games.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA FALLS ON THE ROAD AT NORTH CAROLINA, GREEN BAY AT CAROLINA

The Virginia Cavaliers lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels yesterday 28-17 at North Carolina.  The Cavs looked good at times but overall the Heels where just a better team yesterday, the Cavs will return home the next two weekends against Southern Miss and Idaho respectively.  I am still tallying up the results of Mickey's College Football Pick-Em contest and send out the updated information later this morning.  In the NFL today the Packers will be on the road at Carolina looking to stop Cam Newton and the high powered Carolina Panthers offense, the Pack will be looking for a better defensive effort than they got last week.  The Redskins will be at home again this week against the Arizona Cardinals, could the Skins be 2-0 after today.  Matt Kenseth captured the pole for today's race in Chicago edging out Paul Menard for the top spot.  Kurt Busch & Ryan Newman had the best qualifying efforts of those drivers in the chase.  Brad Keselowski won yesterdays Nationwide race with Carl Edwards finishing 2nd.  Well I hope everybody has a good day.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA LOOKS FOR ANOTHER WIN

The 2-0 Virginia Cavaliers will be on the road at North Carolina this afternoon looking to knock off the Tar Heels and improve to 3-0 on the season.  This will be a very tough task for the very young Cavalier offense against a very good UNC defense, the game will be on ESPN U at 3:30pm.  The Colonial Heights Colonials football team lost on the road last night at Park View South Hill 27-6, the Colonials will return home next Friday against Armstrong.  Down at the beach First Flight was off last night while Manteo picked up it's 2nd victory of the week beating Riverside 14-0, earlier in the week they beat First Flight 36-6.  The will qualify today for the 1st race of the chase at Chicago today, the race is tomorrow afternoon.  In MLB action last night the Braves lost to the Mets while Cardinals beat the Phillies and with the win the Cardinals are now just 3.5 back of the Braves for the NL Wildcard.  I did go over to Dunkin Donuts this morning and I gave the donuts a 80 this morning, they just weren't as good as they usually are.  MICKEY

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MICKEY

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME, It was 45 years ago today that I came into this world.  I have to say that I feel every bit of 45 today and this year my birthday fell on my favorite day of the week Friday.  The Colonial Heights Colonials football team will be on the road tonight at Park View South Hill, the CH JV team won there against Park View on Wednesday.  I went up the high school and caught some volleyball action last night, the CH girls team won while the boys team lost to Matoaca.  The 1st race in the race for the chase is this weekend at Chicago with all the chase contenders looking to have a good run.  It is a very cool 52 degrees here in Colonial Heights this morning.  MICKEY

OLD OUTER BANKS PHOTO

I found this old Outer Banks photo taken from atop the Wright Brothers Memorial on facebook which appears to be taken either in the 50's or 60's.  As you can tell by the photo there hasn't been a whole lot of development yet but you can see the hotel on beach road that sits at the end of our street when you look off our front porch.  I wish I could say I have everybody's pick for this weeks games but I don't, I am missing one persons picks which has delayed me sending out who everybody picked this week.  It's not easy running a contest which has so many people in it if they are not going to follow the rules of the contest, hopefully they will get there entry in today.  The next 2 days the temp will only be in the 60's and there is a 50% chance of rain the next 3 days however the rain is suppose to be very light.  MICKEY

THE PICKS HAVE BEEN A BIT LOW COMING IN THIS WEEK

Well I have to say the picks have been a bit slow trickling in this week compared to lat week, I still need 7 peoples picks and I am hoping everybody gets them in by 9pm tonight.  The Atalanta Braves continued the push to make the NL Playoffs last night knocking off the Florida Marlins however the Cardinals also one yesterday as well.  The Braves lead the Cardinals for the NL Wildcard by 4.5 games heading into today's games.  I think somebody has a birthday coming up on Friday, does anybody know it is.  MICKEY

REDSKINS WIN, COWBOYS LOSE

The Washington Redskins got off to a bit of a sluggish start in the 1st half yesterday before putting it together in the 2nd half and coming away with a 28-14 win over the New York Giants.  I have to say the Skins looked pretty good in the 2nd half once the shook the rust off.  In cased you missed it last night the New York Jets got a late filed goal and defeated the Dallas Cowboys 27-24.  Next week my favorite team the Green Bay Packers travel down to North Carolina to face the Panthers.  Fellow blogger Keith is out of town in Oklahoma doing some government work.  It looks like some fall weather temps are on the way by the end of the week when temps will only climb into the 60's.  MICKEY

THE CHIEF HANGS ON TO THE LEAD

Well after week 2 of the Mickey's College Football Pick-Em Contest The Chief is in 1st place by himself by 1 game with Erik, Andrew, Bobby, and Chiz just 1 game back.  The top 20 players are within 6 games of 1st place.  Me and the Chiz had the best week going 18-4 and Andrew Phillips had the roughest week going 11-11 and is now in 23rd place, Andrew I now you no more about college football than that.  I thought that the games were pretty easy this past week but this upcoming week I think things are going to be allot tougher.  Please send your picks in by Wednesday night no later than 9pm.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA WINS, ECU FALLS

The Virginia Cavaliers blew a 23-3 lead and then fell behind 31-23 before kicking a field goal as time ran out to come away with a 34-31 win over Indiana, as I have said before a win is a win and you take them anyway you can get them.  The Cavs are now 2-0 and will be on the road at North Carolina next week.  Well I went down to East Carolina yesterday and saw a very good football game between the Pirates and Virginia Tech with Hokies coming away with a 17-10 win.  The difference in the game was VT defense which only allowed just 100 yards total offense in the game, also 3 dropped balls in the game doomed the Pirates.  The Washington Redskins open up there season at home against the New York Giants, I think it will be a tough task for the Skins to win today.  Kevin Harvick won last nights race at Richmond and Dale Jr did qualify for the chase but will need to start running allot better to have a shot at winning the chase.  It looks like things are getting pretty tight in the Mickey's College Football Pick-Em Contest, it looks like The Chief still leads and I will release the standings and next weeks games a little later this morning.  MICKEY

WE MUST NEVER FORGET

HEADING DOWN TO EAST CAROLINA

Well I am going to be heading down to Greenville, NC a little bit later this morning to watch the East Carolina Pirates face the Virginia Tech Hokies this afternoon.  I am sure the place is going to be packed looking for the Pirates to upset the Hokies.  The Virginia Cavaliers will be on the road tonight at Indiana looking to beat the Hoosiers.  Last night Arizona State beat Missouri 37-30 in OT, I did not stay up to watch this game.  The Manteo vs First Flight high school football game at the beach was postponed last night to Monday.  Kyle Busch picked up another Nationwide win last night at Richmond holding off Carl Edwards for the win.  David Reutimann captured his 1st pole of the season for tonights Sprint Cup race, Jamie McMurray will join him on the front row.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart will be looking to fill the final spots in chase tonight with a good run.  I did go down to Wal-Mart this morning and then over to Hopewell to gets some donuts at the Dunkin Donuts.  Well I guess I better go run a few miles before I head down to NC.  MICKEY

PACKERS WIN A WILD ONE

The Green Bay Packers opened the 2011 season last night with a 42-34 win over the New Orleans Saints in a game which both defenses couldn't stop each other until the Packers made a goal line stand with no time on the clock from the 1 yard line.  The Packers were hit with an interference penalty on the final play of the game so the ball was placed on the 1 yard line and the Saints tried to run it in and were stopped stone by the Packer defense preserving the win, next week the Packers will travel to Carolina.  The Colonial Heights football team has the week off while at the beach Manteo travels to First Flight.  I will be heading down to Greenville, NC tomorrow to watch the East Carolina vs Virginia game, it should be a pretty will atmosphere down there as Pirates will be looking to upset the Hokies.  The Nascar Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be here in the capital city of Richmond this weekend and are hoping that all the rain we have all this weeks stops so they can get the races in.  MICKEY

THE NFL SEASON OPENS TONIGHT

The NFL season gets underway tonight with the defending Super Bowl Champions Green Bay Packers playing hot to the New Orleans Saints.  The Packers will be looking to defend the Super Bow Championship season with another stellar season.  Well I have all the picks for week 2 of the Mickey's College Football Pick-Em Contest and I will be sending out the master sheet of who everybody picked this week later today.  One of the tracks Nascar use to run at in its heyday the Rockingham Speedway will be returning to Nascar next year when it hosts the Nascar Tuck Series, hopefully this will be the 1st step in getting the Nationwide & Sprint Cup Series back at the track.  Well we got over 2.5 inches of rain yesterday here in Colonial Heights and over the last 2 weeks we have had our share of rain and we might get a little more today.  My aches & index is a bit high today because my left achillies heel is bothering me along with my right shoulder, I think I am just falling apart a bit.  MICKEY

GORDON WINS AT ATLANTA

Jeff Gordon picked up his 85th career win on the Sprint Cup Series yesterday edging out Jimmie Johnson for the top spot in Atlanta.  This week the Sprint Cup Series will be coming to Richmond and if Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart want to make the chase this year they will need to have a good run at Richmond.  I still need 8 peoples picks for this weeks contest, I am hoping that everybody will get there picks in by 9pm tonight or face a possible penalty.  We got a couple pretty good rain showers yesterday and there is still s pretty good chance of rain today as well.  MICKEY

SCHOOL STARTS TODAY

Where in the world did summer go, today is the 1st day of school here in Colonial Heights and it looks like it going to be a bit on the wet side.  There is a 70% chance of rain and t-storms today and 60% chance tomorrow and part of the rain is from the remnants from what use to be TS Lee.  The are going to try to run the Nascar race in Atlanta later this morning at 11am, looking at the radar from the Atlanta area this morning they should be able to race today.  I have only received about 8 peoples picks so far in the pick-em contest, hopefully the rest of the people will start sending them in today.  MICKEY

HAPPY LABOR DAY

Well I want to wish everybody a Happy Labor Day and yes I will be laboring today.  After being off for about the 1st 42 years of my life i have had to work the last 2 years.  Well last nights Nascar race was washed out by the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee and wont be run until Tuesday morning at 11am because the Atlanta area is expecting allot of rain today as well.  This weekend the Nascar Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series will be at Richmond.  It looks like we might get some rain from the remnants of TS Lee on Tuesday & Wednesday.  Well I am off to work.  MICKEY

POTASSIUM Without this essential mineral, your heart couldn't beat, your muscles wouldn't contract, and your brain couldn't comprehend this sentence. Why? Potassium helps your cells use glucose for energy. The shortfall: Despite potassium's can't-live-without-it importance, nutrition surveys indicate that young men consume just 60 percent to 70 percent of the recommended 4,700 mg a day. To make matters worse, most guys load up on sodium: High sodium can boost blood pressure, while normal potassium levels work to lower it, says Lydia A. L. THE CHIEF CONTINUES TO LEAD

Well it looks like The Chief has started off this year like he finished last year going 14-6 in week 1 however Julianne and Erik have joined him atop the standings after week 1.  Also newcomers Glen & Guy had a good week going 13-7.  Last years co-champion Les had a very rough week going 7-13 and George joined him also going 7-13.  The top 16 players are within 4 games of the top spot while positions 17-23 have some work to do to stay within striking distance.  Please remember I need you picks back by no later than Wednesday night at 9pm but you can send them back earlier than that.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA BEATS WILLIAM & MARY 40-3

The Virginia Cavaliers played a little sloppy in the 1st half before turning it on in the 2nd half in routing William & Mary 40-3 in front front of 52,000 at Scott Stadium.  The Cavs appear to be a much quicker team on both sides of the ball and that's mainly because of all the freshman and red shirt freshman who made there debut last night.  The Cavs defense really shut down the Tribe and offensively both of the Cavs quarterbacks played pretty solid for the most part.  Next week the Cavaliers travel to Indiana to face the Hoosiers.  The East Carolina Pirates didn't fair as well against the South Carolina Gamecocks falling 56-37, the Pirates lead at the half 24-14 and it doesn't get any easier for the Pirates when they face Virginia Tech.  How about those Richmond Spiders upsetting the Duke Blue Devils last night 23-21, Duke may not want to schedule the Spiders anymore because they have beating them the last two times they have faced them.  I am tallying up the results of the 1st week of the college football contest and I will be sending out the standings after week 1 and next weeks game a little later this morning.  Carl Edwards won last nights Nationwide race at Atlanta holding Kyle Busch for the win, Kasey Kahne will be on the pole for tonight's Sprint Cup race.  MICKEY

I AM READY FOR SOME COLLEGE FOOTBALL

AN ELBOW TO THE HEAD
Well I am going to watch the Virginia Cavaliers face the Tribe of William & Mary tonight.  It looks like it is going to be a very good for some college football action with temps in the low 80 at kickoff before dropping back into the mid 70's after the sun goes down, GO CAVS.  Also the other team I follow pretty closely the East Carolina Pirates will face the South Carolina Gamecocks tonight in Charlotte, it will be a tough task for the Pirates that's for sure.  In college football action last night Baylor upset TCU 50-48 in very wild college football game, with Baylor's upset last night the MCFP contest standing tightened up a bit.  The Colonial Heights Colonials football team opened up the 2011 season yesterday with a 26-7 win over Thomas Jefferson, the Colonials are now off until September 16 when they travel to Park View South-Hill.  Down at the beach First Flight improved 2-0 with 38-16 win over Nansemond-Suffolk, next week First Flight has a very tough game when Manteo comes to town.  The will run the Nationwide race tonight in Atlanta and the Sprint Cup race tomorrow night.  Well I have allot to do before I head to UVA so let me go.  MICKEY

COLONIALS TO PLAY THIS AFTERNOON

The Colonial Heights Colonials football team will play this afternoon at 4:30pm against Thomas Jefferson, the game was originally scheduled for 7pm in tonight.  Due to the fact that they didn't know if the middle school area was going to have power or not they decided to move the time of the game, however I do think the area does have power now.  I doubt I will make today's game.  In our college football contest last night Temple, Bowling Green and Syracuse picked up wins last night.  I will be heading up to Charlottesville tomorrow to watch the Virginia vs William & Mary game.  It sure has been a long week here in Colonial Heights and I have to say I am glad to see that the week is coming to an end and hopefully there won't be any hurricanes coming our way for a while.  MICKEY

COLLEGE FOOTBALL STARTS TONIGHT

Well the 2011 college football season gets underway tonight with numerous games, however there really isn't any marquis games tonight but there are several games tonight which we have in our contest.  I will be going to see the Virginia vs William & Mary game on Saturday night.  The Colonial Heights Colonials will open up the 2011 season tomorrow against Thomas Jefferson, right the middle school area doesn't have power so the game may have to be moved to 4pm.  The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be down in Atlanta this weekend before returning to Richmond next weekend.  Also fellow blogger Scott worked as line judge last night but didn't have to throw his flag any however did say he was getting an earful from the coach on his side.  There is a new Hurricane in the Atlantic and its name is Katia however most of the models have the system heading out to sea. However there is a tropical wave in the Gulf of Mexico which could develop into a tropical storm and bring some rain to the U.S. next week.  MICKEY
