VIRGINIA WINS

Well the Virginia Cavaliers started the Mike London era off with a win yesterday in Charlottesville with a 34-13 win over the Richmond Spiders in a game that was pretty much in doubt for three quarters. The Cavs were lead offensively by Keith Payne who had 4 touchdown runs. The one thing that I saw in the game was they Cavs really struggled with there special teams coverage and the defense looked very suspect-able at times. I thought the Richmond QB looked very good in the loss. Next week the Cavs will travel out Los Angeles to face the USC Trojans next Saturday night. Today the other team that I follow very closely the East Carolina Pirates open up there season at home against Tulsa. I have to say there were a few surprises in week 1 of the Mickey's Place pick-em contest and will release the updated standings and next weeks games later this morning. Denny Hamlin captured the pole for tonights race in Atlanta, I doubt i will be up to see the finish of tonights race since I have to work tomorrow. Also you can tell Fall is just around this morning because it was a very cool 58 degrees this morning here in the Heights. MICKEY

Strawberries & blueberries?
Of course, both are great for you, so try to eat lots of these two fruits. But when you compare the nutrients in an equal amount of each, blueberries have a slight edge. Blueberries are particularly rich in fiber – four times that of strawberries – as well as containing more natural sugars, much more vitamin E and some unique micronutrients that are good for memory.

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot. -Michael Altshuler

VIRGINIA HITS ROCK BOTTOM, ECU & GEORGIA BOTH FALL

It sure wasn't a good day for the college football teams that I root for yesterday. First off if Virginia could get any lower I don't know how, they lost to a team that hadn't won a game in the ACC since 2004 and they loss 31-3 no less. This game was actually tied at 3-3 at halftime and UVA gave up 28 unanswered points in the 2nd half to Duke and the UVA offense may be the worst in country, I don't see them winning another game this year. They just look like a team that is playing with no heart in my opinion. I went to the East Carolina game yesterday and the Pirate defense gives up 621 yards total offense to Houston and the Pirates lose 41-24 and I have to tell you this game was totally dominated by Houston. The ECU play calling yesterday left a lot to be desired thats for sure and the Pirate faithful sure were letting the coaches no there opinion about it. The ECU offense sure didn't to the ECU defense any favors either, the defense was on the field way to much yesterday. Then I figure that Georgia will beat Alabama for sure last night and we turn the XM radio on and at the half Georgia is losing 31-0 to Alabama in Athens no less. The Bulldogs tried to make a 2nd half comeback but came up short in falling to Alabama 41-30. Then to top it all off Virginia Tech beats Nebraska 35-30 to end my day, it also was a very tough day for Clemson, Wake Forest and Florida. Today in the NFL the Green Bay Packers will be in Tampa to face the Buccaneers and the Redskins will will be in Dallas to face the undefeated Dallas Cowboys. In a high school football game of note yesterday Petersburg improved to 4-0 with a 42-7 win over Hopewell. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be at the Kansas Speedway this afternoon for race 3 in the chase, Denny Hamlin won yesterdays Nationwide Race. Just in case anybody wants to know my PAIN index is up this morning just because of what my college football teams did yesterday. The Mickey's Place college football pick em contest will be updated soon. MICKEY

BIG GAME FOR THE PACKERS TONIGHT, EAST CAROLINA FALLS

The Green Bay Packers have a big game in the spotlight tonight when the Dallas Cowboys make a visit to Lambeau Field. Both teams enter the game at 2-0 and most NFL experts think the Cowboys are the best team in the NFL, it will be big test for the Packer defense. The Washington Redskins will be at home again today against the Arizona Cardinals, the Skins need to win all there home games because of there very tough schedule. The East Carolina Pirates suffered there 1st loss of the season yesterday falling to N.C. State 30-24 in OT, the Pirates just couldn't get the big play on offense when they needed too, the Pirates will be back at home next weekend against Houston. The Tampa Bay Rays clinched there 1st playoff spot in franchise history yesterday beating the Minnesota Twins, they lead American League East by 2 1/2 games with a week to go in the season but can to no worst than a wild card. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be in Dover, Delaware this afternoon for race 2 of the chase, Jeff Gordon will start from the pole with Mark Martin joining him on the front row. Kyle Busch won yesterdays Nationwide race. In fall ball baseball action yesterday we won one and tied won, it was a very nice day to play baseball here in Colonial Heights. Today fellow bloggers Andrew & Keith along with Maureen are going to see the Washington Nationals play the San Diego Padres. I will be updating the Mickey's Place college football pickem contest very shortly, there will be some changes in the standings for sure, I didn't have a very good week. Also today is the last day of Summer. MICKEY

Living in the Present
I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.

Eating After Exercise
It is also important to consume carbohydrate, such as fruit or juice) within 15 minutes post-exercise to help restore glycogen.

Research has shown that eating 100-200 grams of carbohydrate within two hours of endurance exercise is essential to building adequate glycogen stores for continued training. Waiting longer than two hours to eat results in 50 percent less glycogen stored in the muscle. The reason for this is that carbohydrate consumption stimulates insulin production, which aids the production of muscle glycogen. However, the effect of carbohydrate on glycogen storage reaches a plateau.

FAVRE LESS PACKERS OPEN SEASON TONIGHT

Well the Brett Favre less Green Bay Packers open there season at home tonight against the Minnesota Vikings. I hope that the Packers play as well as Favre played for the Jets leading them to a 20-14 win over the Dolphins and throwing 2 TD passes, if the Packers don't play well this year I think it could end very badly for the GM and coach who had the power struggle with Favre. The ECU Pirates are now #14 in one poll and #20 in another, they will travel to play Tulane this weekend weather permitting, however it does look like Hurricane Ike will miss New Orleans. Jimmie Johnson won yesterdays Sprint Cup race holding off Tony Stewart for the win and the nightcap Carl Edwards won the Nationwide race. I sounds to me that fellow blogger Al had a very long day over at RIR having to be over there at 7am and then having to take photos of two races which didn't end to around 9pm. Also Keith is out of town again at tank school, that just sounds dangerous. I wonder if Les has dried out yet from directing traffic in the rain Friday night on the BLVD. MICKEY

Beware Coupons and Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Price
Retailers often put stipulations on coupons, such as requiring you to buy a certain amount before they take a discount (e.g. $10 off $50 or more). It sounds like a deal, but that example only amounts to a measly 20% discount. Select shoppers know they only save about 25% when they buy-one-get-one-half-price (ex: you pay $50 for one item, $25 for the next: Total of $75 on what would have been $100 purchase, thereby only saving 25%).

UVA FOOTBALL TICKETS

It appears that my source for UVA football tickets may have dried up, so I am looking for some tickets for any UVA home games this year with the exception of the Richmond game. I will be heading to East Carolina that weekend to see them play West Virginia. Hopefully I will be able to find some tickets to some other games. I would have like to have gone to the USC at Virginia game but I may go to the ECU vs Virginia Tech game, I will have to decide probably by Sunday if am going Charlotte or not. If I can't get a ticket to the UVA game I might just go to the beach and watch both games on TV. It appears dad has Andrew walking a straight line again after a week at the beach, he even has Andrew out running with him, it did take him a few days to deprogram him though. My PAIN index remains about the same this morning due to the fact I didn't sleep well last night. Oh I almost forgot did you see who won the Nascar truck race last night, thats right Kyle Busch picked up another win. MICKEY

Lack of calcium can contribute to stress fractures and the bone disease, osteoporosis. The best sources of calcium are dairy products, but many other foods such as salmon with bones, sardines, collard greens, and okra also contain calcium. Additionally, some brands of bread, tofu, and orange juice are fortified with calcium.
