SOUTH CAROLINA WIN THE CWS AGAIN

The South Carolina Gamecocks won there 2nd consecutive CWS Championship last night beating the Florida Gators 5-2 and winning the best of 3 series 2-0.  The South Carolina pitching staff deserves allot credit for how they pitched in the CWS, they were pretty much lights out the whole while they were in Omaha.  With the new bats in college baseball this year pitching has become much more important and next year those same bats will be coming to high school baseball as well which will cut down on the offense at the school level as well.  It looks like you are going to have to back to playing small ball to be successful.  Well we got a pretty sever t-storm here in Colonial Heights last night, we needed the rain but we didn't need all that lightning though.  MICKEY

SOUTH CAROLINA TAKE GAME 1

The South Carolina Gamecocks took game 1 of the CWS last night beating the Florida Gators 2-1 in 11 innings.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the top of the 8th inning and won it in the 11th.  The Gamecocks are now 1 win away from winning the CWS for the 2nd straight year.  Also yesterday in the MLB the Los Angeles Dodgers filed for bankruptcy, the Dodgers are reportedly in the red several million dollars and have been having trouble all year meeting there payroll.  The Dodgers franchise was once the franchise most owners tried to model themselves after, now they are just struggling to stay alive.  I sure I am ready ready to go on vacation.  MICKEY

KURT BUSCH WINS AT SONOMA, CWS FINALS START TONIGHT

Kurt Busch won yesterdays Nascar Sprint Cup race in Sonoma, California holding off Jeff Gordon for the win.  There were allot of drivers with some very short tempers towards the end of yesterdays race, it looked they had a bit of road rage.  Next weeks race is at Daytona on Saturday night.  The College Baseball World Series Finals start tonight with game 1 of the best of three series with Florida vs South Carolina, the Gamecocks will be looking to repeat as champs.  We got a pretty good rain shower during the night and it is quite a bit more humid this morning than it was the last two mornings, we can use all the rain we can get right now.  Well I am off to work, MICKEY

Here’s the one you’ve been waiting for: A University of Chicago study shows that not only can playing a sport improve your learning and comprehension, but simply watching sports can do the same. "Your brain appears to treat any engagement with sports—either as a player or spectator—as somewhat similar activities," says researcher Sian Beilock, Ph.D. Dedicated players or fans score the most brain-boosting points—catching a game every few weeks won't cut it. It’s perfect excuse for telling your wife or girlfriend that you must spend a few hours a week watching sports.

I AM READY TO GO ON VACATION

Well it has almost been a year since I went on vacation and I have to say that I am ready to go again and that's exactly what I am going to do starting Friday night.  Looking at all the traffic cameras down on the OBX yesterday it looks like this week is going to be the busiest week of the summer so far down there but I am sure next week there will be even more people down there.  This year on the OBX there will be two place that they will be shooting fireworks from, they will be at the Nags Head Fishing Pier and the Manteo Waterfront.  A good place to watch both shows will be on the sand dunes at Jockey's Ridge.  Reed Sorenson won yesterdays Nationwide Race at Road America when Justin Allgaier ran out of gas on the last lap under caution, the Sprint Cup Series will race at Sears Point today.  MICKEY

Work out hard. Sleep hard. Intense workouts and lack of sleep do not make good partners because while you’re sleeping, your body works to repair muscle stress that occurred during exercise. The harder you train, the more sleep and rest you need to recover; otherwise, you will might suffer from injury and over-training.

IT JUST WASN'T MEANT TO BE

What else can you say about Virginia's 3-2 loss to South Carolina in 13 innings last night bit it just wasn't meant to be for the Cavaliers.  The Cavs had numerous opportunities to win last nights game but just couldn't get the big hit when they needed it.  The Cavs pitchers did there job very well striking out 18 South Carolina batters but the Gamecocks pitchers pitched just as well getting several of the pitchers best friends the double play at key times shutting down Virginia rally's.  The Gamecocks will join Florida in a all SEC College World Series Final next week in Omaha, Florida eliminated Vandy yesterday with a 6-4 win.  Joey Logano captured the pole for tomorrows race at Sonoma edging Jamie McMurray for the top spot.  I did go over to Dunkin Donuts in Hopewell again this morning and I have to say the donuts this morning were the best they have been all year over there, they were just right.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA STAYS ALIVE AT THE CWS

The Virginia Cavaliers baseball team stayed alive at the CWS last night with 8-1 win over California.  The Cavs got a very strong pitching performance from Tyler Wilson and the offense woke up a bit getting 11 hits last night.  The Cavs will now turn to there ace tonight Danny Hultzen when the face South Carolina at the CWS, the Cavs will have to beat South Carolina twice to make it to the CWS Finals.  Also today at the CWS the Vanderbilt Commodores will face the Florida Gators with Vandy having to do the same thing UVA has to do win twice to advance to the CWS Finals.  The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be in California this weekend at the Infineon Speedway which is a road course so look for some drivers who don't always run up front to be up there with some of the regulars.  Well I sure I am glad that is Friday.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA MUST WIN TONIGHT

The Virginia baseball team must win tonight against California at the CWS or there season will come to an end.  The Cavs will need another strong pitching tonight and hopefully the offense will wake up tonight for they live play another day.  Last night at the CWS the Vanderbilt Commodores ended the the North Carolina Tar Heels season beating the Heels 5-1, Vandy must now beat Florida twice to get to the CWS Finals.  Not a whole lot else going on around besides it being hot here in the Heights but the countdown is below 10 days before vacation starts.  MICKEY

SOUTH CAROLINA TO MUCH FOR VIRGINIA

The South Carolina Gamecocks were simple just the better team last night in beating Virginia 7-1 in the CWS.  The Gamecocks made the Cavs pay for some early miscues and never looked back in the win.  With the loss the Cavs really have there work cut out for them now because they are going to have to win 3 straight games in 3 days to get to the finals of the CWS.  With the loss yesterday Virginia falls into the losers bracket in will face California again Thursday night, the Bears eliminated Texas A&M yesterday with a 7-3 win.  Tonight at the CWS North Carolina will face Vanderbilt in a elimination game.  After watching most of the games in the CWS this year there is no doubt in my mind that the SEC is the best conference country for baseball just like they are for football.  Yes the smoke that has come into the area last night is from a fire burning in North Carolina, however it is not from a fire burning in Dare County but from a fire further south in the state.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA TO FACE SOUTH CAROLINA TONIGHT IN THE CWS

The Virginia Cavaliers will face the South Carolina Gamecocks tonight at 7pm in the winners bracket with the winner gaining a big advantage in moving to the CWS Finals.  Yesterday at the CWS the North Carolina TarHeels eliminated the Texas Longhorns with a 3-0 win the Heels will face the loser of the Florida vs Vanderbilt game which will finish up this morning because of severe weather which moved through Omaha.  The Florida Gators were leading the Vanderbilt Commodores 3-1 in the 6th inning when the stopped the game.  Also in the losers bracket game today Texas A&M will face California with the loser going home.  It really felt like a fall day yesterday here in the Heights with temps not getting out of the 70's and for most of the day it was in the uppers 60's but the rest of the week it looks like it is going to be in the 90's.  GO CAVS, MICKEY

WELL I AM BACK AT THE BEACH, CWS STARTS TODAY

Well I am back on the OBX for a couple of days and I was very surprised that there really wasn't much traffic coming into the OBX last night.  With CHHS graduating last night I am sure that there will be quite a few of the graduates and underclassmen heading down today for beach week.  There is a bit of haze down here from forest fire burning on the mainland and you can really smell the smoke from the fire this morning.  The fire has been burning for about a month now and it looks like it may burn all summer unless they get some significant rain.  The CWS starts today with North Carolina facing Vanderbilt and Florida facing Texas, the Virginia Cavaliers will face Cal tomorrow at 2pm.  The will qualify today for tomorrows Sprint Cup race at Michigan, I am predicting that a Ford will win this week.  I did make it down to the Dunkin Donuts here at the beach and I think they one down here is better than the one at home, there donuts seem to be much more consistent.  Well I am going to run down to Wal-Mart now before it gets to crowded down there.  MICKEY

Well I think I am going to head back to the beach tonight for a few days however I will be back in town by 2pm Sunday to watch the Virginia vs California baseball game.  This will be the last time head down before I go down when I am on vacation in July.  The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be at Michigan this weekend and they will qualify tomorrow and race on Sunday and over the years Michigan has been a track where allot of races have been decided by gas mileage.  There usually no a whole lot cautions flags at Michigan because of how wide the track is.  Well there is not much else going on so I am heading to work.  MICKEY

BOSTON WINS THE STANLEY CUP

The Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks last night 4-0 in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to win Lord Stanley's Cup.  The Bruins had 3-0 lead entering the 3rd period and got a late empty net goal to capture there 1st Stanley Cup since 1972 proving just how hard it is to win the Stanley Cup.  Well dad, Keith and Andrew are heading up to Washington tonight to watch the Nationals face the St. Louis Cardinals if it doesn't get rained out.  There is a pretty good chance of rain so hopefully it will hold off.  I don't know whats in the air this morning but my eyes are watering and itching as well and I didn't even run outside yesterday but something is irritating them that's for sure.  By the way the way I forgot to mention that the Dallas Mavericks won this years NBA Finals, I didn't watch a single NBA game this year.  MICKEY

STANLEY CUP FINALS GAME 7 TONIGHT

Well they will play game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Vancouver and the winner will come away with the Stanley Cup.  If the Bruins want to win the Stanley Cup they will have to do something they haven't done in the finals and that's to win a game in Vancouver, so far through the 1st six games the home team has won every game.  Well we are going to have two more days of fairly cool temps before the heat and humidity returns for the weekend, the last 2 days have pretty much been Chamber of Commerce days.  Speaking of the weekend I have been thinking of heading down to the OBX but I have decided for sure if I am going yet.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA STUNS UC IRVINE 3-2 AND ARE HEADING BACK TO THE CWS

The Virginia baseball team was down to it's final out and for that matter its final strike with nobody on base before rallying for a 3-2 win in the bottom of the 9th inning.  After UC Irvine took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 9th inning the 1st two batters for the Cavs went 2 up and down before the Cavs got a pair of singles a walk and then a game winning single by Chris Taylor which scored 2 runs and sent the Cavs back to the College Baseball World Series.  The Cavs will now face California on Sunday at 2pm on ESPN in there 1st game of the CWS.  The Boston Bruins forced a game 7 on Wednesday night beating the Canucks last night 5-2, the Bruins scored 3 goals in the 1st seven minutes of the game and never looked back.  The Bruins will have to find a way to win in Vancouver where they have lost 3 straight games in the finals.  I have yesterday was a very pleasant day with temps in the low 80's and very low humidity's as well, it almost felt like a fall day.  MICKEY

UC IRVINE FORCE A GAME 3 TODAY

The UC Irvine Anteaters battled back from a 3-0 deficit to upend the Virginia Cavaliers 6-4.  The Cavs actually lead 3-0 yesterday before about a 4 hour rain delay before Irvine got solo HR, walk, a hit batter and costly Cavaliers error which propelled them to the win.  Today's deciding game 3 is set for 4pm and will be on ESPN2 and a win today will still put the Cavaliers where they want to be back in the College Baseball World Series.  The Cavs just have to put yesterdays game behind them because there is nothing can do about yesterday today. Florida, South Carolina, Texas and California punched there tickets yesterday to the CWS and the only other series still going is the Florida State vs Texas A&M series.  Jeff Gordon won yesterdays race at Pocono holding of Kurt and Kyle Busch for the win, however 3rd place finisher Kyle Busch's car failed post race inspection for being to low.  I am sure there will be a large fine and probably a crew chief suspension handed down from this.  The will play game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals in Boston with Canucks leading there series 3-2 so the Bruins must win  tonight to force the deciding game 7, GO BRUINS.  It is going to be a much cooler week here in the Heights this week high temps in the low 80's all week.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA TAKES GAME 1 AGAINST UC IRVINE

The Virginia baseball team picked up 6-0 win over UC Irvine in game 1 of there best of 3 series yesterday to take a 1-0 series lead heading into this afternoons game.  Even though Danny Hultzen didn't have his best stuff he was good enough to keep the Anteaters bats offense off balance before the rain delay before getting into some trouble in the 6th before having Cody Winiarski come in a get a pitchers best friend a double play to get out of trouble.  Winiarski come in and pitched the final 3.2 innings allowing just 1 hit, the big blow offensively for the Cavaliers was a Jared King 3 run HR.  In other NCAA baseball action yesterday both North Carolina and Vanderbilt punched there ticket to this years College World Series.  The other winners yesterday were Texas A&M, California, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Texas.  Kurt Busch captured his 2nd pole in as many weeks at Pocono edging Paul Menard for the top spot, I think today's race is going to be another fuel mileage run and I think Dale Jr. will be in the mix again. We got a pretty good gully washer here in Colonial Heights along with a pretty good lightning storm as well, the two rain-gauges that I saw online both registered over 1.25 inches. MICKEY

“Well that was a really really good team playing really really well and it wasnʼt much of a contest. They were as advertised and I think our best chance was if lightning were to blow up the stadium.” UC Irvine Coach Mike Gillespie

VIRGINIA VS UC IRVINE TODAY AT 1PM, VANCOUVER WINS GAME 5

The Virginia Cavaliers quest to get back to the College Baseball World Series resumes today in Charlottesville at 1pm today when the Cavs face the Anteaters of UC Irvine.  The Cavs will be throwing there ace today #2 overall in MLB Draft Danny Hultzen against the Anteaters and today's can be seen on ESPNU or ESPN3.COM.  In the Stanley Cup Finals last night the Vancouver Canucks bounced back from 2 blowouts in Boston to beat the Bruins last night 1-0 to take a 3-2 lead in the battle for Lord Stanley's Cup, game 6 is set for Boston on Monday night.  They will qualify at Pocono this morning for tomorrows race, in yesterdays final practice Denny Hamlin was the fastest followed by Brian Vickers.  In the last few weeks viewership on the blog has been declining and participation has been about zero which may force me to end daily posting and just to it when I feel like it.  MICKEY

SUPER REGIONALS START TODAY, GAME 5 TONIGHT

Although the Virginia baseball team does not play until tomorrow half of the 8 Super Regional match ups began today.  The Cavs will play game 1 tomorrow at 1pm against Cal Irvine on ESPNU.  The will play game 5 tonight in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals in Vancouver with the series tied at 2-2, I think the winner of tonight's game will win the Stanley Cup.  The Nascar Sprint Cup Series is at Pocono this weekend and yes this race could come down to fuel mileage just like the last 2 races, also this is a place where Jr. has run well in the past and could end his winless streak.  Well I went to the dentist yesterday and surprisingly he didn't find anymore problems with my teeth that I didn't already know about, he did see again what he would like me to get my wisdom teeth taken out but he has been telling me that for a few years.  I may have to reevaluate that with my oral surgeon and see what he thinks about it.  TGIF, MICKEY

BOSTON EVENS UP THE SERIES AT 2 GAMES A PIECE, DENTIST TODAY

The Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 last night to even up the Stanley Cup Finals at 2 games a piece.  I watched the first 2 periods of the game and I have to say the Bruins got a couple of soft goals but if you don't score in Vancouver's case you cant win.  Well I have to go to everybody's favorite place today the dentist just for a checkup but I still don't like going there for anything.  My sinuses/ allergies continue to bother me, I wish they would just go away.  Its going to be hot again today so try to stay cool.  MICKEY

BRUINS TAKE GAME 3, ATHLETIC BANQUET TONIGHT

The Boston Bruins left no doubt that they still want Lord Stanley's Cup beating the Vancouver Canucks in Boston last night 8-1.  The Bruins got some very big saves early in the game which seemed to spark the offense in the win., game 4 is set for tomorrow night in Boston.  The spring sports banquet will be held tonight at the high school honoring all those who participated in spring sports, I hear they may be having pizza this year.  Nascar has fined Richard Childress $150,000 and placed him on probation for the rest of the year for his altercation with Kyle Busch on Saturday at Kansas.  I guess since nobody else would retaliate against Kyle he thought he would take care of business himself, maybe he got his point across but I doubt it.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA WINS REGIONAL, KESELOWSKI WINS AT KANSAS

The Virginia baseball team beat the East Carolina Pirates yesterday 13-1 to advance to the Super Rgional next weekend where they will face the Anteaters of Cal-Irvine who beat UCLA last night.  The Cavs jumped out to a 9-0 lead last night before East Carolina was able to push a run across the plate and with another good pitching performance pulled away from the Pirates.  The Cavs racked up 17 hits in the win.  Brad Keslelowski won yesterdays Nascar race at Kansas edging Dale Earnhardt Jr. in fuel mileage run to the finish, I have to say Jr. is getting close to winning but so far just hasn't been able to get over the hump.  They will play game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals in Boston tonight and its a must win game for the Boston Bruins if they don't want to go down 3-0, if the Bruins lose tonight they are pretty much done.  Well is looks like it is going to be another hot week so stay cool.  MICKEY

VIRGINIA BEATS ST. JOHNS 10-2, CANUCKS WIN, RICHARD CHILDRESS & KYLE BUSCH SQUARE OFF

The Virginia baseball team is one win away from moving on to next weekends NCAA Baseball Super Regionals after beating St. Johns 10-2 last night.  The Cavs jumped on St. Johns early and never looked back.  The Cavs will face the winner of this afternoons East Carolina vs St. Johns game which will be played at 1pm, the Pirates eliminated Navy yesterday with a 6-1 win.  The Vancouver Canucks beat the Boston Bruins in OT last night 3-2 and with the win now lead the battle for Lord Stanley's Cup 2-0, the Canucks are looking pretty good right now but don't count the Bruins out just yet.  Kurt Busch captured the pole for today Sprint Cup race at the Kansas Speedway edging Juan Pablo Montoya for the top spot but thats not what everybody is talking about at the Kansas Speedway.  What everybody is talking about is a fist fight between Kyle Busch and Richard Childress which took place after yesterdays truck race in the garage area of the Kansas Speedway and after Busch roughed up one the RCR'S drivers on the track after the checked flag.  From all the reports that are coming out from Kansas is that Childress definitely got the best of Kyle Busch after he go him in a headlock and struck him several times in the face.  Also for all the reports that I have seen is that Richard Childress initiated the altercation and I am sure there will be some fines and suspensions handed down from this incident.  Well you can smell the smoke from the forest fire on the Dare County mainland again this morning here in Kill Devil Hills, the fire spread yesterday afternoon when the winds picked back up.  The new scanner is now running pretty good at least for the time being, there were some reception problems at times yesterday which I hope I have corrected.  I think I will be be heading back home about 11am.  MICKEY

The Virginia Cavaliers baseball team opened up there run for the National Championship yesterday with a 6-0 win over Navy yesterday and will face St. Johns tonight who beat East Carolina yesterday 2-0.  The Cavs will face St. Johns tonight at 6pm and you can watch the game on NCAA.COM.  They will play game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Vancouver with the Canucks leading the series 1-0.  I am at the beach trying to get the new scanner up and running to pick up the new radio system they have on the OBX, I have tried programming with not much luck so I am going to take it down to Radio Shack to see if they can clone it for me to the local system.  This scanner is a whole lot more complicated than the other digital scanner.  Well I am going to head down to Wal-Mart then up to Radio Shack.  MICKEY

The NCAA Baseball Tournament gets underway today with the entire field of 64 playing.  The Virginia Cavaliers will face Navy today at 1pm and other 2 teams in there regional East Carolina and St. Johns will play at 6pm.  The Cavs enter the tournament as the #1 seed which looks good on paper but now they have to back it up on the field.  The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be at the Kansas Speedway this weekend.  I am going to head down to the beach tonight for the weekend to see if I can get the new scanner up and running correctly, I made some more progress with it last night and I am hoping i got everything programmed correctly now and it picks up good down there.  At work I went up to Fredricksburg again yesterday to deliver to couple of Chinese Restaurants, after going up there about 5 or 6 times the last few weeks I think I am finally getting use to the area.  Well today looks like it is going to be a very nice day with highs only in the low 80's.  MICKEY

VANCOUVER TAKES GAME 1, I HAVE A SORE LEFT KNEE

The Vancouver Canucks got a late 3rd period goal in game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals to beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 and take a 1-0 series lead.  It sounded like it was a great game 1 but I didn't see it because I was trying to program my new scanner for the beach which is going a little bit slower than I like.  This scanner is more complicated than the one I have here at the house so its taking a bit longer to figure everything out.  I wish I was making better progress because I am starting to get a little frustrated with it.  I never that I could injure myself while setting at my desk but yesterday at work I was getting up to go check on something and banged by left knee of a post beside my desk and is quite sore this morning, the is the 2nd time I have hit this post but the 1st time was just glancing blow but this time was direct hit to my left knee.  The temp still may make it to 90 today but the humidity will be lower which will make it feel a bit cooler.  MICKEY

JUNE IS HERE

Its hard to believe that today is the 1st day of June, the 1st 5 months of 2011 have really flown by.  It is going to be pretty warm again today here in Heights before cooling off a bit the next several days and there will be a noticeable drop in humidity as well which will make it feel pleasant for a few days.  Well we got a new police scanner for the beach last night and I am still trying figure the thing out, the new scanner is a bit more complicated than the old one but I think I am getting the hang of it.  I tried to program by the instructions that came with it with not to much luck before finding a manual somebody had posted online which was much more helpful than the one that came with the product.  I just don't know why companies cant make things simpler for the consumer.  I hope everybody stays cool today.  MICKEY
