SOUTH CAROLINA WINS THE CWS

The South Carolina Gamecocks won the College World Series last night in 11 innings beating UCLA 2-1. The Gamecocks trailed most of the game 1-0 before they were able to tie it and send it to extra innings where the won the CWS. Our Appomattox League baseball team will be in action tonight at Hopewell at 6pm. It's going to be in the low 80's the next 3 days so go outside and enjoy these very mild temperatures. MICKEY

Keeps you sharp: Physical activity nourishes brain tissue and stimulates its production of neurons, synapses, and blood vessels. Some studies have found that walking can counter faltering memories in people over age 50.

WELL WE GOT SOME MUCH NEEDED RAIN LAST NIGHT

Well we got some much needed rain last night here in Colonial Heights, the yards around CH had started turning pretty brown so maybe the rain will turn everything back green. The rain however did wash out our baseball game at Manchester, we will make up those games Friday night at home at 6pm which means I wont be coming to the beach until Saturday morning. At the CWS last night South Carolina took game 1 of the series beating UCLA 7-1, UCLA will have to win the next 2 games to win the CWS. MICKEY

Pools, spas, hot tubs: Did you know drowning is not the only common risk associated with swimming pools and hot tubs? One of the biggest risks associated with pools, spas, and hot tubs in homes is electrocution. Faulty underwater lighting, aging electrical wiring, sump pumps, power washers, and ungrounded vacuums are among the most prevalent causes, in addition to electrical appliances and extension cords that fall into the water.

A BUSY DAY

I am getting tired just thinking about how busy my day is going to be. First off I am off to work from about 7am to 3:30pm, then over to Manchester High School for two Appomattox League Baseball games at 5pm, then back home to run a couple of miles and then to bed. One good thin about the baseball games tonight is that they cannot go on forever because they don't have any lights at Manchester, the way some of these games have been going that is a good thing. The finals of the CWS began tonight with South Carolina facing UCLA for the National Championship in game 1 of the best of threes series. Jimmie Johnson won yesterdays Nascar race again, its seems like he wins just about every week. If any of you fellow bloggers find a navy blue Virginia Cavaliers hat let me know, I seem to have lost on somewhere and I have no idea where it is. Well after tomorrow it seems this hot weather is going to break with highs in the low to mid 80's the rest of the week, I might have to pull out one my sweatshirts. MICKEY

CWS FINALS SET, U.S. SOCCER TEAM LOSES

Well the finals are now set for CWS an it will be UCLA against South Carolina in the best of 3 series which begins tomorrow. In yesterdays action UCLA beat TCU 10-3 and South Carolina beat Clemson 4-3, I have to say I think UCLA will be the favorites because of there starting pitching which is very good. In World Cup soccer action yesterday the United States lost to Ghana 2-1 in OT, the U.S. had plenty of chances but just couldn't score the winning goal in regulation or the tying goal in the extra time. As I type todays entry there is a mosquito in the house eating me alive. MICKEY

ALMOST TIME

Well it's almost time to go on vacation, 1 week from today I will be heading to the OBX to join a very large contingent of family and friends for some R & R. I think everybody is ready to go now. At the CWS yesterday South Carolina beat Clemson 5-1 and TCU beat UCLA 6-2 which means the winners of todays games will advance to the best of 3 finals of the CWS to determine the National Champion. Also today there is a huge soccer game for the United States who will Ghana in the knockout round of the World Cup. Juan Pablo Montoya captured the pole for this weekends race at New Hampshire edging out Kasey Kahne for the top spot. Well I did head down to Wal-Mart again this morning and they are still in the remodeling phase which means you cant find anything, it looks to me there is no coordination at all of where they are putting things right now. Also I don't know where they found the people to do the remodeling but there are some very shady looking people doing it, I also noticed that the managers were watching them pretty closely when they were leaving the store. Scott are you packing your truck up today? MICKEY

Exercise helps make you happy. People who exercise are healthier, more energetic, think more clearly, sleep better, and have delayed onset of dementia. They also get relief from anxiety and mild depression, comparable to medication and therapy. But even when you acknowledge the tremendous benefits, if you’re not already exercising regularly, it can be hard to adopt the habit.

NOT A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP

For some reason last night I didn't sleep very well at all, I think I woke up about 5 times during the night and one time when I woke up I thought it was Saturday morning. Well its going to be about 10 degrees cooler today than it was yesterday, its still going to be in the low 90's but that it is better than the low 100's. At the CWS last night South Carolina beat Oklahoma 3-2 in 12 innings, South Carolina will face Clemson tonight and must beat the Tigers twice to advance to the best of three finals against either TCU or UCLA, TCU has to beat UCLA twice to advance to the finals. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series is at New Hampshire this weekend. From what I hear from Georgia Scott is already ready to go on vacation and already has his bags packed. I am ready to go but I don't have my bags packed just yet. MICKEY

Exercise outside. Maybe it's the fresh air, maybe it's the sunshine, but something about exercising out in the open makes you walk or run faster than doing the same exercise in the gym. I have to agree with this even though I don run inside more than outside.

A LONG NIGHT IN PETERSBURG

Well all I can say is was one long night in Petersburg and I got home about 10:45 last night. We did win both games but they were two of the slowest 5 inning games that I have ever seen, I didn't think the games were ever going to end. Well it didn't make to a 100 yesterday but it is suppose to hit the century mark today, 99 was the high yesterday. MICKEY

DAY NOT OFF TO A GOOD START

Well I have to say my day didn't get off to a good start when I went out to get the paper and I reached into the paper box and there was nothing in there, they might as well keep the paper today if they can't get it here on time. Our Appomattox League team will be back in action tonight at Petersburg that is if we have enough players, there are several on vacation and some who just say they cant be there so I hope we get th play. At the CWS yesterday South Carolina eliminated Arizona Sate with an 11-4 win and Clemson was beating Oklahoma 6-1 when the game was suspended in the 6th inning. They will finish that game today and then TCU will face Florida State in an elimination game. It is going to be over 100 degrees today and tomorrow before it drops into the mid 90's for the weekend. I am ready to go on vacation. MICKEY

Put five rubber bands around your wrist every morning. That's how many 16-ounce bottles of water you should drink during the day to rev up your metabolism, helping to burn more calories. At least, that's what German researchers found when they got 14 participants to drink about 16 ounces of water. The volunteers' metabolic rate – or how quickly they burned calories – jumped a third within 10 minutes of drinking the water and remained high for another 30 or 40 minutes. The researchers estimated that, over a year, increasing your water consumption by 1.5 liters a day would burn an extra 17,400 calories, or about 5 pounds worth. Since much of the increased metabolic rate is due to the body's efforts to heat the liquid, make sure the water you're drinking is icy cold.

SINUSES BOTHERING ME

Besides it being very hot this week there is something in the air really bothering my sinuses, my eyes are itching and my left ear is bothering me also. Our Appomattox baseball team split last night with Wakefield, we won the 1st game 11-2 before dropping the 2nd game 9-3. Tomorrow night we will play at Petersburg at the Petersburg Sports Complex. At the CWS Florida became the 1st team eliminated when they fell to Florida State 8-5, also yesterday UCLA beat TCU 6-3 and Clemson stunned Arizona State 6-3. It sure was very slow day on the blog yesterday. MICKEY

APPOMATTOX LEAGUE

Well our Appomattox River Baseball League team opens its season up tonight at home against Wakefield, game time is at 6pm at Shepherd Stadium and we will play 2 five inning games. Last year we split with this team and they were pretty good. At the CWS Oklahoma beat South Carolina 4-3 and the game between Clemson and Arizona State was rained out and will be play this morning. Jimmie Johnson won yesterdays race in Sonoma, California holding off Robby Gordon for the win. Enjoy todays cool temperature of 92 because it is going to be hotter the rest of the week, also summer officially starts this morning. MICKEY

HAPPY FATHERS DAY

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads who read or visit Mickey's Place, I hope you all have a good day. It is going to be a very hot Fathers Day here in Colonial Heights with temps in the mid 90's and a heat index around 100, just looked at the extended forecast for the week and it looks like it is going to be hot all week. The CWS got underway yesterday with TCU beating Florida State 8-1 and UCLA beating Florida 11-3, today South Carolina will face Oklahoma and Clemson will face Arizona State. Where was everybody at yesterday to blog sure was quiet thats for sure. MICKEY

Strawberries: Eating more vitamin C-rich foods, such as strawberries, may help to ward off wrinkles and age-related dryness, suggests research from 2007 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Vitamin C’s skin-smoothing effects may be due to its ability to mop up free radicals produced from ultraviolet rays and also its role in collagen synthesis. (Vitamin C is essential for collagen production.) You can find vitamin C in a multitude of cosmetics—of which some have been shown to be effective in protecting skin—but why not go straight to the source for a tasty boost of C: red bell peppers, papaya, broccoli and oranges are other excellent sources.

TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY

Well two weeks from today me and allot of you fellow bloggers will be on OBX on our first day of vacation. I don't know about you but I am ready to go on vacation thats for sure. I understand fellow blogger Scott and the rest of the family went to see the Atlanta Braves game last night against Kansas City, I looked for him on TV but I didn't see him. Well the U.S. soccer team tied again yesterday at the World Cup this 2-2 against Slovenia. The U.S. team has to beat Algeria in there next game to move on to the next round of the World Cup. The College Baseball World Series starts to day in Omaha with a couple of games, it just won't be the same since Virginia isn't in it but there will still be some good baseball. Well I did go down to Wal-Mart again this morning and I have say the store is in a big mess this morning, I could hardly find anything, I wish they would hurry up and finish remodeling. I also went over to Dunkin Donuts this morning as well and the I have say that the donuts were the best that I have had in several months. IT'S GRADUATION NIGHT

Well its graduation night again here in Colonial Heights, I have attended the last two graduations but will not be in attendance tonight when the Class of 2010 graduates. However a fellow blogger will be in attendance again this year and I hope he pays better attention this year than he did last year. For anybody who cares about the NBA the Lakers won another championship last night beating the Celtics. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be racing in Sonoma, California this weekend on the road course. The United States soccer team will be back in action today at the World Cup, they will play at 10am this morning against Slovenia. Well I sure am glad that its Friday because it sure has been a long week. MICKEY

I WENT TO CHARLOTTESVILLE YESTERDAY

Well yesterday at work I got out of the office for a day and rode on the truck Charlottesville, it wasn't to bad except we didn't get back until after 4pm. I don't mind riding on the truck every now and then but I sure don't want to do it on a regular basis thats for sure, just to much lifting after being in the office for the last 6 months. Also I have one wisdom tooth that has been flaring up a bit the last couple of days, hopefully it will go away soon and that it is not a sign of things to come. I sure don't want to have my wisdom teeth taking out. My sleep was cut about an hour short last night because of a t-storm so I am a bit groggy this morning. MICKEY

Take your time. Don't speed through mowing, because you may miss spots. While you're mowing in a wide-open area, stay in control by keeping your mower on a medium speed setting. Throttle down to lower speeds when you're turning corners and trimming borders for a closer cut.

VIRGINIA SEASON COMES TO AN END

The Virginia Cavaliers baseball season came to an end last night at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners 11-0 denying the Cavs a trip back to CWS. The Cavs batters were kept off balance all night by the Oklahoma pitchers and the Virginia pitching staff simply didn't pitch well at all. In the end though Oklahoma was the better team. Well we are going to have a couple of days where the temperatures are going to be in the mid 80's before returning to 90's by the weekend so enjoy them before the heat and humidity returns. MICKEY

A COUPLE OF GRASS CUTTING TIPS
Alternate your mowing route. Lawns that are mowed the same direction every time develop unsightly stripes that may grow back irregularly. To avoid creating a pattern that lasts all season, alternate mowing one direction across the lawn the first time and then perpendicular to this direction the next time.

Mow early. For the best cut, mow in mid to late morning, when it's cool but the morning dew has dried off.

VIRGINIA LOSES 10-7 MUST WIN TONIGHT

The Virginia baseball team lost to Oklahoma yesterday afternoon 10-7 and must win tonight if it wants to return the College Baseball World Series. The problems for the Cavaliers began in the bottom of the 1st inning when its starting pitcher couldn't throw strikes. Tonights game starts at 7pm and can be seen on ESPN2. Also yesterday South Carolina, Florida State, TCU, Florida State and Arizona State punched there ticket to Omaha. Denny Hamlin won yesterday NASCAR race at Michigan and you talk about a ho hum race, this was it. Well its going to be another hot one today so try to stay cool. MICKEY

VIRGINIA WINS GAME 1, USA TIES

The Virginia Cavalier baseball team used two HR's to lead them to a 3-2 win over the Oklahoma Sooners yesterday in Charlottesville, game 2 will be this afternoon at UVA. With 1 more win the Cavaliers will return to the College Baseball World Series. Yesterday the Florida Gators became the 1st team to make it this years CWS. In World Cup Soccer action yesterday the U.S. team tied England 1-1, from what all the experts are saying a tie was like a win for the U.S. team. Don't forget to checkout the pictures from the post below of Keith's day with Scott and the boys on there Redneck Adventure yesterday. Andrew's LL team stayed alive yesterday beating the Orioles and will now have to beat the Yankees to win the league. MICKEY

Redneck Day in Ga.

after a big breakfast we all took the tour of beautiful downtown, knoxville and roberta ga., we then traveled to musella to eat fresh homemade peach ice cream. we then made our way to fort valley to sample the worlds largest peach cobbler at the ga. peach festival. after that we made our way to cordele ga. for the watermelon festival where we all tried our hand at the watermelon crawl. sometime after lunch we went to a car show in downtown macon and enjoyed an educational tour of the ga. sports hall of fame. the end of a perfect day was capped off with a wonderful trip to smiley's flea market for an extremely cultural affair. thank goodness we were able to talk keith out of that bargain tattoo.

VIRGINIA VS OKLAHOMA

The Virginia Cavaliers and Oklahoma Sooners will play game 1 of there best of 3 series today in Charlottesville at 3pm with the winner of the series heading to the College Baseball World Series. Yesterday in Super Regional action Florida, Florida State, TCU and Cal State Fullerton all won to take 1-0 series leads. Well the World Cup of Soccer started yesterday and who would have ever guessed that both games would end in a tie, the US will play England today. Kurt Busch won the pole for this weeks race at Michigan edging out Jamie McMurray for the top spot. Andrews LL team will be back inaction this morning at 10am, they lost last night so they have to win today to keep there season going. I understand that Scott fixed Keith a nice steak dinner last night down in Georgia on his first night of his visit. Scott what are yall going to do today? MICKEY

I SURE AM GLAD IT'S FRIDAY AGAIN

I sure am glad that it is Friday because I need a couple of days off, i have just been tired this week. Well Keith will be heading over to Scott's house tonight to spend a few days Scott and family, I am sure Scott will have plenty for him to do. Well the NCAA baseball super regionals start today with 4 games, Virginia doesn't play until tomorrow at 3pm though against the Oklahoma Sooners. Don't forget the World Cup also starts today as well with few days but the USA team doesn't play until tomorrow. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be at Michigan this weekend. MICKEY

Oatmeal: Eating a breakfast made with “slow-release” carbohydrates, such as oatmeal or bran cereal, 3 hours before you exercise may help you burn more fat, suggests a recent study in the Journal of Nutrition. Here’s why: in the study, eating “slow-release” carbohydrates didn’t spike blood sugar as high as eating refined carbohydrates, such as white toast. In turn, insulin levels didn’t spike as high and because insulin plays a role in signaling your body to store fat, having lower levels may help you burn fat.

Soup: Research, published in the journal Appetite, has shown that people who start a meal with vegetable soup eat 20 percent fewer calories over the course of their meal.

THE MAN WHO WINS
The man who wins is an average man,
Not built on any peculiar plan,
Not blessed with any peculiar luck;
Just steady and earnest and full of pluck.

When asked a question, he does not “guess”.
He knows, and answers, “No or “Yes.”
When set a task that the rest can’t do,
He buckles down till he’s put it through.

Three things he’s learned: that the man who tries
Finds favor in his employer’s eyes;
That it pay to know more than one thing well;
That it doesn’t pay all he knows to tell.

So he works and waits, till one fine day,
There’s a better job with bigger pay,
And the men who shirked whenever they could
Are bossed by the” man whose work made good.

BLACKHAWKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers last night 4-3 in OT to win there first Stanley Cup in since 1961, as I said before the series started the Blackhawks just had more talent than the Flyers. In case you didn't know it the biggest sporting event in the world starts tomorrow when they play the 1st game in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the United Sates team doesn't play until Saturday when they face England. The United States is a major underdog to win the World Cup. After a few very nice days weather wise the heat and humidity starts to make its return the next few days with high in the upper 80's to low 90's. MICKEY

MY MOUTH IS A BIT SORE

My Mouth is a bit sore this morning after having to go back to the oral surgeon yesterday because my protective cap on my implant had become lose. After about 5 shots of Novocaine and a little tightening up all is well again but it is very sore this morning. In high school baseball action yesterday Matoaca lost to Western Branch 3-1. The Flyers will face the Balckhawks tonight in game 6 of there series, the Flyers have to win to keep the series alive. Also last night we had our spring high school awards dinner and banquet, I have to say it was better than last year because we had BBQ instead of turkey which I can't eat. MICKEY

VIRGINIA VS OKLAHOMA SERIES TO START ON SATURDAY

The best of 3 Super Regional Baseball Series between Oklahoma and Virginia will open up with game 1 on Saturday at 3pm on ESPNU followed by game 2 on Sunday at 4pm an ESPN and if a game 3 would be needed it would be played Monday at either 1pm or 7pm on ESPN2. Looking at the schedules for the Super Regional it looks like all the game from all the series are going to be covered the ESPN series of networks. The Matoaca baseball team will be on the road tonight against Western Branch High School, the game will be played at ODU. I have posted a link below to the photos AL took at Andrews LL game on Sunday before the rains came, they mad up the game last night. Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals will be on Wednesday night in Philadelphia, the Blackhawks lead the Flyers 3-2 in the best of 7 series. Also fellow blogger Keith is in Georgia doing some grueling government work. MICKEY

Myth: Cooked veggies are less nutritious than raw

Fact: It depends on the vegetable. "Cooking destroys some nutrients, but it releases others," says Marion Nestle, author of What to Eat. It destroys vitamin C and folic acid, according to Nestle, which is why it's not a great idea to cook oranges.

On the other hand, she says, cooking releases vitamin A and the nutrients in fiber and makes them easier to digest. It's also easier for your body to absorb more lycopene, a cancer-fighting antioxidant, in cooked tomato sauce than from raw tomatoes.

Steam or roast veggies instead of boiling, which leaches out water-soluble vitamins into the cooking water.

ST. JOHNS STUNS VIRGINIA

The St. Johns Red Storm stunned the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville tonight 6-5 on a 2 run HR in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Cavs will get another shot at the Red Storm tomorrow night at 6pm if they lose that game the season will come to an end. Hopefully the Cavs will be able to regroup and pick up another WIN. The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers last night 7-4 to take a 3-2 series lead, they will play game 6 tomorrow in Philly. Denny Hamlin won yesterdays race at Pocono. MICKEY

VIRGINIA BEATS OLE MISS

The Virginia Cavalier baseball team beat Ole Miss last night 13-7 to move to the finals of the Charlottesville Regional in the NCAA baseball tournament, the Cavs will face the winner of the St. Johns vs Ole Miss game which will be played at 1pm today. Of the 8 ACC teams that were baseball tournament N.C. State is the only team that has been eliminated. They will play game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Chicago, the Blackhawks had better win this one or they are going to be in trouble. Andrews LL team on there 1st playoff yesterday afternoon and they will play again today. In high school baseball action yesterday Cosby beat Matoaca 8-7 in 8 innings, both team will play Tuesday in the state quarterfinals. Todays Nascar race is at Pocono, I think JR may pull the upset today. It is going to be another hot one today so try to stay cool. MICKEY

Myth: Fresh vegetables are more nutritious than frozen

Fact: Studies show that sometimes you can get more nutrients from frozen veggies, depending on variety and how old the vegetables at your supermarket are. That's because produce starts losing nutrient quality as soon as it's picked.

Frozen vegetables are flash-frozen right after harvest so they are preserved at their peak of freshness when they are most nutritious. Your best bet in terms of taste, nutrition, and the environment is still local in-season produce. When that's not an option frozen can be a better choice (from a nutrient standpoint) than spinach that takes two weeks to reach your table.

Well I went down to Wal-Mart this morning at 5:30am only to find out they have started to remodel the store, there were allot of isles that I couldn't get to and they have started to move things around as well. In a few weeks I won't be able to find anything. MICKEY

Strength Training
Strength training is also an important part of a weight loss routine. Consult a certified personal trainer to develop a program that will work all of the major muscle groups in two to three sessions per week. Strength training can be done with free weights, weight machines, body weight, resistance tubing or a combination of all of these things. Each session should last no more than an hour to avoid injury and overtraining.

Flexibility
The third component of a weight loss program is flexibility. This includes stretching during a cool down and taking classes such as yoga. Increasing your flexibility increases your range of motion and ability to do exercises while keeping your muscles limber and less prone to injury.

BREAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS

It has come to my attention that a fellow blogger ran a red light in Petersburg yesterday, this information comes from a very reliable source and Will not mention any names. The NCAA baseball tournament begins today with VCU Rams facing the Virginia Cavaliers and The Citadel facing Virginia Tech, also there are 6 other ACC teams in the filed also. In high school baseball action today Matoaca will face Mills Godwin with the winner advancing to tomorrows regional final. They will play game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Philadelphia, the Blackhawks lead the series 2-1. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series is at Pocono this weekend. Well I have to say when I went into the dentist office yesterday my teeth weren't hurting but this morning it feels like somebody punched me in both jaws, I have taking some Tylenol hoping that will ease the pain a bit. Cardio
Cardio, in the form of aerobic exercise, is one type of exercise that can help your body burn fat. Aerobic exercise includes brisk walking, running, swimming, cycling, and any other activity that raises your heart rate over a sustained period of time. Depending on how much weight you have to lose, your cardio should last at least 20 minutes per session, three days per week. If you have substantial weight to lose, work on making your cardio more intense and aiming for 60 minutes four to five days per week. If you are just beginning to exercise and cannot exercise for 20 minutes at one time, breaking your sessions up over the course of the day still works as long as each session is at least 10 minutes.

Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.

I have to go to the dentist today for a regular checkup, hopefully they won't find anything else wrong, I don't know if I can afford to do anymore dental work right now. MICKEY

No Overnight Success
Just as gaining weight took time, losing the extra weight will also take some time. Losing weight too quickly can do damage to your body and put you in a position to not be able to keep the weight off. Take your time losing weight and you will have more success.

WE GOT A ALLOT RAIN LAST NIGHT

Well we go about 1.5 inches of rain last night between a couple of thunderstorms we had here in Colonial Heights last night and the power was knocked out in part of the city for a few hours. We needed some rain but we just didn't need it all at once. The weather also caused problems for the high school baseball playoffs as well, Dinwiddie and Cosby never started and Manchester had a 3-0 lead over Matoaca when they stopped it in the 3rd inning, they will resume that game today. My neck is a bit sore this morning I think I hurt it playing wiffle ball on Monday. Mickey

Safe Weight Loss Amount
Safe and long-lasting weight loss occurs at a rate of about 1 to 2 lbs. per week. When you first start to change your diet and exercise routines, you may experience more weight loss due to loss of water weight. If you continue to lose more than 1 to 2 lbs. per week, see your doctor to make sure there is no medical explanation for the additional weight loss.

Eat More Frequently
In order to keep your metabolism working efficiently and to keep your body from thinking it's starving, eat every two to four hours. These meals will be smaller than a typical three-meal-per-day diet, enabling you to eat more frequently. Eating more frequently also keeps your blood sugar and insulin more stable. Each time you eat, be sure to have lean protein, complex carbohydrates and fiber to keep your body full and fueled.
