VIRGINIA TO FACE VCU

The Virginia baseball team will face VCU on Friday in Charlottesville in the 1st round NCAA baseball regionals, Ole Miss & St. Johns will be joining them there. The Cavaliers are #5 seed overall in this years NCAA baseball tournament. There are total of 8 teams from the ACC in this years tournament, Virginia Tech is the only other team from Virginia in this years field of 64. After reading several Virginia message boards most Cavs fans think they should be a national seed than they are but I don't know about that. MICKEY

MEMORIAL DAY POEM

Memorial Day
by Michelle R. Christman

As we stand here looking
At the flags upon these graves
Know these flags represent
A few of the true American brave

They fought for their Country
As man has through all of time
Except that these soldiers lying here
Fought for your country and mine

As we all are gathered here
To pay them our respect
Let's pass this word to others
It's what they would expect

I'm sure that they would do it
If it were me or you
To show we did not die in vein
But for the red, white and blue.

Let's pass on to our children
And to those who never knew
What these soldiers died for
It's the least we can do

Let's not forget their families
Great pain they had to bear
Losing a son, father or husband
They need to know we still care

No matter which war was fought
On the day that they died
I stand here looking at these flags
Filled with American pride.

So as the bugler plays out Taps
With its sweet and eerie sound
Pray for these soldiers lying here
In this sacred, hallowed ground.

Take home with you a sense of pride
You were here Memorial Day.
Celebrating the way Americans should
On this solemnest of days.

VIRGINIA BEATS MIAMI, BLACKHAWKS WIN GAME 1

The Virginia baseball team bounce back with a 12-8 win over Miami in there 3rd game of the ACC baseball tournament, the Cavs will now have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to find out who is going to be in the regional with them next weekend in Charlottesville. It could be the VCU Rams who beat UNC Wilmington to win the CAA baseball tournament. The Chicago Blackhawks won game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals last night 6-5, there wasn't a whole lot of defense played in this one thats for sure. Well I will be heading home from the beach later today because I have to work on Memorial Day. MICKEY

I AM ON THE OUTER BANKS

Well I made it down to the Outer Banks last night at just about 8pm, the traffic wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be but it was steady. I went out this morning and road up the beach and just happened to stop by Dunkin Donuts as well and I have to say they were very good. Speaking of the beach it won't be very long before just everybody will be down here the week of July 4. The will play game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight with Philadelphia visiting Chicago, I just don't see anyway that the Flyers can beat the Blackhawks. The Virginia baseball team will play there final game of the ACC tournament today against Miami, there is no way they can be in the finals tomorrow so they will play today and then go home to see who they will in next weekends NCAA baseball tournament. FLORIDA STATE HAMMERS VIRGINIA

The Florida State Seminoles hammered the Virginia Cavaliers 11-4 today in the ACC baseball tournament. The Cavs simply did not play well at all in this game and it looked like the pitchers were throwing BP to the Seminoles batters. The Cavs fate in the ACC tournament is now out of there hands, they still have a shot make the championship game but its not a good shot at all. Hopefully they will bounce back with a win over Miami on Saturday. MICKEY

VIRGINIA OPENS ACC TOURNEY WITH WIN

The Virginia baseball team opened the ACC baseball tournament with a 6-4 win over Boston College yesterday. The Cavs trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the 8th before getting 3 runs and holding on in the top of the 9th for the W, today the Cavs will face Florida State at 4pm. Tonight in the Central District Matoaca will face Dinwiddie for the CD Tournament Championship, I will not be going to tonights game because I have to be at work at 5pm on Friday. I am going to be heading down to the OBX for a few days this weekend, hopefully it will be a fairly nice weekend on the OBX. I don't know about the rest of yall but my allergies are reallly bothering me. MICKEY

Listening to Music
Listening to music is perfect for increasing motivation during a workout. It also increases the motivation to spend. You're more apt to give in to impulse purchases in shops where instrumental or classical music is playing, according to one study.

Experts believe that loud music also impacts spending.

"Louder music in restaurants pushes people to eat faster, order more and consume more food because they can't talk to each other over the noise," explains Paula C. Peter, assistant professor of marketing and consumer behavior at San Diego State University. "Being overwhelmed by music also interferes with our ability to think clearly, which can lead to spending more money."

VIRGINIA PLAYS TODAY

The Virginia baseball team will open up the ACC baseball tournament today at Noon when it faces Boston College, the game will be on TV but I will be following at work on the computer, GO CAVS. In the Central District baseball tournament last night Dinwiddie beat Prince George and Matoaca beat Thomas Dale. My back is staring to feel a little better bu it is still a bit sore. Also the carnival is back in town here in CH at the Food Lion shopping center of all places, they are taking up just about half of the parking lot so its pretty hard to get to the store. MICKEY

THE FLYERS ARE IN, PAIN INDEX ON THE RISE

Well the Philadelphia Flyers finished on the Montreal Canadiens last night with a 4-2 win and with the win win the series 4-1 advance to the Stanley Cup Finals where they will face the Chicago Blackhawks. I am predicting that the Chicago Blackhawks will win the Stanley Cup this year. My PAIN index is at about 8.8 this morning because I have a very sore back and you will not believe how I hurt it. On Saturday morning I decided to re-pot one of the peace lilies we have in the house and in the process of doing that I have strained some of my muscles in my lower back, hopefully it will start to improve sometime today. Andrew's team lost a tough won last night in LL action falling to the Reds 8-7. Tonight in high school baseball action the Central District baseball tournament will get underway with Prince George facing Dinwiddie and Matoaca facing Thomas Dale, unfortunately the Colonials are not in it this year. Also may allergies have been pretty rough the last few days. MICKEY

Paying With Plastic
Takeout or dine in? Paper or plastic? Cash or credit? Of all the choices you make at the checkout counter, the decision to pay with a credit card has the biggest impact on your bottom line.

Multiple studies, including this 2008 study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, have found consumers are willing to spend more when they pay with a credit card instead of cash.

"Credit cards allow consumers to focus more on what they're getting, or buying, than what they're losing, or spending," explains Kit Yarrow, a professor of psychology and marketing at Golden Gate University. Credit cards "buffer the reality of spending because they leave more cash in our pockets and purses and provide a delay before payment is required."

BLACKHAWKS SWEEP SHARKS

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks yesterday 4-2 to sweep the Sharks 4-0 and move on the Stanley Cup Finals where they will most likely play the Philadelphia Flyers unless Montreal make a miraculous comeback which does not seem likely. Well we got some more much needed rain yesterday afternoon, the only problem I had with the storms is it knocked out the Direct TV for about 2 hours, however I did see some of the Nascar Hall of Fame Inductions before it went out. VIRGINIA KNOCKS OFF MIAMI AGAIN, FLYERS SHOUT MONTREAL

The Virginia baseball team beat Miami for the 2nd straight day yesterday at Miami this time knocking off the Hurricanes 7-4. The Cavs never trailed yesterday and out now off until Wednesday when they will likely play Boston College, the time has not been set yet for this game. The Philadelphia Flyers are now just one win away from playing for the Stanley Cup after shutting out the Montreal Canadiens for the 3rd time in the series yesterday 3-0, with the win the Flyers now lead the series 3-1. The Chicago Blackhawks are also just one win away from joining them in the Stanley Cup finals and could do so by beating San Jose again today, the Blackhawks are playing very well right now. Also Scott's dad is in the hospital Macon, he is having kidney problems and it looks like they are going to have to put him on dialysis on Monday. MICKEY

VIRGINIA CLAIMS THE #1 SEED

The Virginia Cavalier baseball team captured the #1 seed in next weeks ACC baseball tournament knocking off the Miami Hurricanes last night 3-1, the Cavs and the Hurricanes will play the final game in the series today. This years ACC tournament will be in Greensboro, NC and from what I understand all the games will be on TV live. In the NHL playoffs last night the Chicago Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in OT to take a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Sharks, the Flyers and Canadiens will play game 4 of there series this afternoon in Montreal. COLONIALS END SEASON WITH A WIN, VIRGINIA FALLS IN THE 11TH

The Colonials baseball team ended the 2010 baseball season with a 7-6 win over Hopewell in 10 innings. It sure wasn't pretty but a win is a win, we had a 6-0 lead going into the 6th inning before Hopewell tied it in the 7th inning but we were able to pull it out in the bottom of the 10th pushing a run across for the win. With yesterdays win we ended the season with a 8-12 record. Also in high school baseball action last night Thomas Dale upset Matoaca 10-3. The Virginia baseball team lost a very tough won at Miami last night falling to the Hurricanes 5-4 in 11 innings, the Cavs must win either tonight or tomorrow to secure the #1 seed in next weeks ACC baseball tournament. In the NHL playoffs last night Montreal beat Philadelphia 5-1, the Flyer still lead the series 2-1. MICKEY

COLONIALS LOOK TO END THE SEASON WITH A WIN

After struggling for the last few weeks the Colonial Heights baseball team looks to the the season tonight with with a victory when it hosts the Hopewell Blue Devils at 6pm. This is the final game of the season and the end of the line for our 4 seniors, it looks like it is going to be a nice night so come on out to the ballgame. The Virginia baseball team opens up its final series of the season tonight at 7pm against Miami, one victory in the series will give the Cavs the #1 seed in next weeks ACC baseball tournament. In the NHL payoffs tonight the Flyers will be in Montreal looking to knock off the Canadiens again tonight, I will say one ting if the Canadiens don't score again tonight they will not win. MICKEY

Vinegar
Two tablespoons of vinegar taken before a meal can help your blood sugar go down. A study at Arizona State University East tested three different groups of people to see what the results would be in healthy people, those with prediabetes (they had signs diabetes was developing), and confirmed diabetics. Before each of two meals a day, the subjects were given 2 tablespoons of ordinary vinegar.

The results: An hour after the vinegar treatment, the diabetics had blood sugar levels that were 25 percent lower than without vinegar. The prediabetics had an even better result: Their levels were lower by about half.

FLYERS AND BLACKHAWKS UP 2-0

The Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks both won again last night in the NHL playoffs and with the win both have a 2-0 series lead in there respective conference finals. The Canadiens have not scored a goal in either of there game and if you don't score you cant win and the Blackhawks picked up both of there wins on the road. The Virginia baseball game last night with VMI was washed out and will not be rescheduled, the Cavs finish up there regular season starting tomorrow with a 3 game season Miami. MICKEY

HOPING FOR A BETTER DAY

I have to say that yesterday was a very long day for the most part. My day didn't get off to the best of starts when on the way to work they had a wreck on I-95 and I had to get off earlier than I like and had to take the long way to work. Then after that I had a terrible sinus headache most of the day which finally went away last night. Today I have to back to the oral surgeon for a checkup on my dental implant which may set me back a few more dollars. The Virginia baseball team is scheduled to play VMI tonight weather permitting, so its not looking to good for baseball. Speaking of baseball the Cincinnati Reds are in 1st place and are playing some pretty good baseball right now, hopefully the pitching staff will continue to hold up the rest of the year. The Colonial Heights Colonials baseball team will play its final game of the season on Thursday at home against Hopewell. The NHL playoffs resume tonight with Philadelphia and Chicago holding 1-0 series in there respective series. MICKEY

VIRGINIA COMPLETES THE SWEEP OF CAROLINA

The Virginia Cavalier baseball team never lead in todays game until the bottom of the 9th inning when John Hicks hit a 3 run HR off the left field foul pole to win it for the Cavaliers 5-2. With the win the Cavaliers have now won 14 straight games and have a 2 game lead heading into the final ACC series of the year at Miami beginning Thursday, the Cavs will also play VMI on Tuesday night as well. COLONIALS FALL AT THOMAS DALE

Even though we lost at Thomas Dale tonight 12-4 I thought we played much better than we did at Meadowbrook on Tuesday. Our biggest problem tonight was that we had 15 walks and you simply aren't going to win at any level of baseball walking that may batters. There is absolutely no defense for a walk, come to think of it walks have been our biggest problem all year. Well our final game of the season will be next Thursday at home against Hopewell. MICKEY

CANADIENS WIN AGAIN

For the 2nd time in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs the Montreal Canadians win a game 7 and with the win move on to the Eastern Conference Finals where they will face either the Flyers or the Bruins. Tonight the Montreal Canadians jumped on the Penguins early and pretty much dominated the game en route to a 5-2 win over the Penguins. The Colonial Heights baseball team will travel to Thomas Dale for its final road game of the season tomorrow for a 5pm contest, I am hoping for a much better effort tomorrow. MICKEY

SOMETIMES I WONDER

Sometimes I wonder if it is worth my time to still be coaching and after tonights 4-2 loss at Meadowbrook I sure feel that way. I sure hate to lose and I think we have far to many guys that don't care whether we win or lose. We have far to many guy's who play for themselves and not the team. We also have to many guys who think they can just show up for a game and beat somebody, believe me we are not that good to think that. There are only a few guys on this team that will do anything you ask them and not think twice about it or complain about. I hate to lose and I just have no place for people who don't want to win or give a 100% effort. I may have offended some of you people who read Mickey's Place but that just the way I feel about it, I am sick of losing. MICKEY

A TOUGH NIGHT FOR THE COLONIALS

It was another very rough night for the Colonials last night at Matoaca where the Colonials fell to the Warriors last night 10-0. The Colonials will continue there road trip next week at Meadowbrook on Tuesday and Thomas Dale next Thursday. Andrew's LL team will be back in action tonight as well. In the NHL playoffs last night Montreal beat Pittsburgh to even up there series at 2-2 and Detroit avoided a sweep beating San Jose but the Sharks still lead the series 3-1. Plan to fail. The road to success is not a straight line. Contingency plans give you the mental assurance that you'll be able to adapt to unexpected crises. Know it will happen. And when it does, get right back on track, right away. Success comes with persistence -- persistence to overcome challenges and persistence to see the big picture.

Eggs: The Perfect Protein

How they build muscle: Not from being hurled by the dozen at your boss's house. The protein in eggs has the highest biological value—a measure of how well it supports your body's protein needs—of any food, including our beloved beef. "Calorie for calorie, you need less protein from eggs than you do from other sources to achieve the same muscle-building benefits," says Volek.

But you have to eat the yolk. In addition to protein, it also contains vitamin B12, which is necessary for fat breakdown and muscle contraction. (And no, eating a few eggs a day won't increase your risk of heart disease.)

How they keep you healthy: Eggs are vitamins and minerals over easy; they're packed with riboflavin, folate, vitamins B6, B12, D, and E, and iron, phosphorus, and zinc.

Choose a range. Instead of tracking your weight by a single number, pick your weight class -- in other words, a range that's comfortable to you. This allows for the natural fluctuations that occur (for instance, when you eat more salt, or it's that time of month). And it keeps you from fixating on some arbitrary number that promotes the idea of all-or-nothing success or failure.

Steak
There's something in steak besides the protein, iron, and B vitamins that's good for us. It's a compound that's part of beef's fat profile called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Doctors Michael Murray and Michael Lyon point out in their book Beat Diabetes Naturally that experiments have shown that CLA works to correct impaired blood sugar metabolism and also appears to have significant anti-cancer properties.

In the most recent research, scientists in Norway supplemented the diets of 180 people with a few grams of CLA and reported that they lost 9 percent of their body weight in one year. For a 200-pounder, that's an 18-pound weight loss!

To get CLA from steak, choose meat from range-fed beef. Eating natural pasturage give these animals far more healthful CLA than the usual grain-rich diet. And keep portions to 3 or 4 ounces.

The Colonial Heights Colonials baseball team will be back at home tonight at 6pm against Prince George. The weather looks like it is going to be nice so there is no reason not to come out to the ball game, after tonight we only have 1 more home game. Andrew's LL team took it on the chin again last night falling 9-6, they will be back in action tomorrow night. The Virginia baseball team will play its only game of the week tonight against VCU, they will be taking exams the rest of the week. In the NHL playoffs last night Boston took a 2-0 series lead over the Flyers and Chicago evened up there series with Vancouver at 1-1. Have a good day. MICKEY

Make a gesture. If you make one small move -- such as buying a pedometer or throwing away the unhealthy foods in your pantry -- you'll be three times more likely to follow your plan. The small change puts a key in your waist-management ignition.

Do it! Once you make a small gesture, make a second commitment. Commit, say, to doubling your daily vegetable intake. With one foot, take a specific first step. The other foot has no choice but to follow.

Spinach, Kale, and Collard Greens
All of these green leafy vegetables are good sources of lutein, a carotenoid that's good for the eyes. That's especially important because people with diabetes may develop debilitating eye problems as complications of the disease. These foods are also great sources of fiber, B vitamins, iron, calcium, and vitamin C.

VIRGINIA LOOKS TO SWEEP DUKE TODAY, KYLE BUSCH WINS

The Virginia baseball team beat Duke yesterday 11-1 at the Durham Athletic Park and will look to finish off the Blue Devils this afternoon with another win. With the win the Cavs are now just tied with Miami for the top spot since Georgia Tech lost again yesterday to N.C. State. Andrews LL team jumped out to a 4-0 lead but could bot hold on for the victory losing by 1 on the Nationals final at bat. Andrews team will have a very busy week playing Mon, Wed and Friday nights at 7:30pm at Ironbridge Park. Kyle Busch won last nights Nascar race at Richmond holding off Jeff Gordon for the win, I have to say it was a pretty boring race as far is Richmond is concerned, just not a whole lot of excitement. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs yesterday the Bruins and the Canucks took 1-0 series leads, the Penguins and Canadiens will play game 2 of there series today with the Penguins leading the series 1-0. Also today the Sharks and Red Wings will play game 2 of there series with Sharks having a 1-0 series lead. MICKEY

VIRGINIA WINS AGAIN, NOW TIED FOR 1ST PLACE

The Virginia Cavalier baseball team beat Duke last night 12-3 in Durham and with N.C. State's win over Georgia Tech the Cavs are now in a 3 way tie for 1st place in the Coastal Division of the ACC with Georgia Tech & Miami. I am going to watch Andrew's LL game this morning at Ironbridge Park, I understand that fellow bloggers Al, Louise, & Donna will be going to watch Jacob's LL game in West Virginia. I talked to Scott last night and he came home from the hospital on Thursday and they gave a few medicines to take for a while. They told him his good cholesterol was a bit low but besides that they don't really no what caused his problem but he was glad to be out of the hospital. Well you could tell it was race weekend down at Wal-Mart this morning, there were allot of new face down there this morning thats for sure. MICKEY

Do it for 5 minutes. Sometimes the sheer magnitude of a project keeps us from getting started. Take the most manageable bite possible, and spend 5 minutes going through a junk drawer, scribbling an idea for a novel, or looking for a new job.

Start walking. If you don't live somewhere where you can start walking instead of driving, make your lunch break a time to pop out and walk. If there's no interesting scenery, load up your iPod with great podcasts.

If you can’t excell with talent, triumph with effort. -Dave Weinbaum
