I HAD A PRETTY BUSY DAY AT THE BEACH YESTERDAY

I had a very busy day here at the beach yesterday. First off me and Scott went on about a 4 to 5 mile bike ride mostly back in Nags Head Woods Wildlife Refuge and I think we might explore it a little more this morning. After that I went on a 3 mile run with Scottie, he had some problems keeping up with me after the 1st mile but he did finish without stopping. After eating lunch I went down to the beach to join the rest of the group and I stayed there for about 3 hours and I got a little sunburn on my left arm and I now water back in my right ear. Then Donna and Joy cooked spaghetti for supper and then I just relaxed for the rest of the day. I have posted a link below to all the photos that AL has taken the last two days, as you can tell AL and Donna aren't in any of the photos. Hopefully me or mom can get some shots of the both of them today. Keith, Andrew and Maureen should be arriving on the OBX tomorrow morning. MICKEY

Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are potentially deadly conditions stemming from a dangerous rise in body temperature. While everyone is at risk of a heat-related illness, some people are especially vulnerable.

The U.S. National Safety Council says the following people should take extra care to keep cool and hydrated during the stifling heat of summer:
-Senior citizens.
-Babies and young children.
-Outdoor pets.
-People with heart conditions, circulatory problems or other chronic illnesses.
-Anyone who has to work outside in the mid-day heat.
-People who exercise outdoors frequently.
-People who take medication that affects sweat production.
-People who abuse alcohol and drugs.

Fitness does not have to be expensive. Ultimately any money you spend on a serious fitness routine will come back to you tenfold in health and fitness benefits and happiness. But if you are on a tight budget there should be no problem. All you need is a rope to jump or a flight of stairs to climb. And let us not forget the endless natural terrain that Mother Nature provides for us to run and hike and rollerblade on.

Besides pride, loyalty, discipline, heart, and mind, confidence is the key to all the locks. -- Joe Paterno

a few from the beach yesterday

it was a slow beach day sunday.

LOGANO WINS AT NEW HAMPSHIRE

Joey Logano won yesterdays rain shortened race at New Hampshire by staying out just a little longer than everybody else did before the rains came. With the win Logano became the youngest driver ever ton win a Sprint Cup race, Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 13th yesterday. Next Saturday night they will race at Daytona. Well I didn't make it over to the beach yesterday because it was cloudy and a bit on the cool side to go in the ocean, the temp was 80. It looks like today maybe a much better beach day with a high around 88 with a chance of afternoon t-storms. Last night we brought home some food from the High Cotton BBQ which was very good, there sure wasn't many leftovers. Me and Scott did go for another bike ride yesterday morning as well, we went on the scenic route by sound on Bay Drive. My ears are feeling much better this morning as well so maybe taking a day off from the ocean was a good thing. MICKEY

BLISTERS ON YOUR FEET
Blisters on the feet are usually caused by friction, typically between skin and sock. Excessive moisture due to sweaty feet or wet conditions can also lead to blisters. Wearing running shoes that are too small or tied way too tight can also cause blisters.

If you already have a blister and it's not painful, just leave it alone, since the skin serves as protection. It will eventually break and the fluid will drain. If the blister is painful, then you should boil a needle for 5-10 minutes in water and once cool, carefully pierce the blister. Press the fluid out and use an antiseptic cream on it. Cover the area with a products such Band-Aid Blister Block or moleskin to protect against infection and provide cushioning.

Create this day
What kind of day will this day be? It will be whatever you create it to be.

For when this day is over, what will matter most is not the assortment of events and conditions it brought to you. What will truly matter is what you have done with it all.

Rather than complaining about or making judgments about the negative energy coming your way, you can refocus that energy in a positive direction. With the minutes and hours, circumstances and events serving as raw material, you can create a day that's very much of your own choosing.

As you sail across life's ocean, you cannot control which way the wind is blowing. Yet you can adjust your sails so that you'll move precisely in the direction you have chosen.

As you go through this day, you cannot control the thoughts, words and actions of others. Yet you can adjust your own attitude, responses and actions to create a perfectly wonderful, effective and fulfilling day out of whatever the world hands you.

Just as surely as you can create a thought in your mind, you can create this day in the way you choose. So choose right now, and in every moment, to create the best day yet.

I HAVE WATER IN BOTH MY EARS

Well after being on the beach for 1 day I now have water and both my ears which is not a good thing. I decided not to wear any ear plugs this year for the 1st time in about 10 years because I though they wear doing just as much harm as good. I have goHopetten water in my ears on numerous occasions with them in. I didn't get the water in my ear until the last time I went in the water yesterday. I am now day to day on whether I go back to the beach or not. Also my allergies are bothering me a bit as well. Mom, Dad and Al are now all at the beach as well now and Maureen, Keith and Andrew should be hear on Wednesday. We all went to The Dunes for supper last night for dinner, thats right all 10 of us and the food was really good at the newly remodeled restaurant. Yesterday morning me and Scott went out on about a 3 miles bike ride and then ran about 3 miles about an hour after that, we may go on a bike ride again this morning if he is not to sore. Hopefully I will have a few pictures to post in tomorrows entry since AL is here. MICKEY

WELL I AM AT THE BEACH

Well I made it down to the beach last night around 9:30pm and the traffic was no where near as bad as I though it was going to be. After being so humid in CH yesterday morning it is a cool 74 degrees this morning here in KDH and the humidity is not bad at all. There is also a slight breeze blowing as well. Fellow blogger Scott and his family arrived late last night however I had fell asleep before they got here so I don't know exactly what time they did arrive. Mom and Dad are suppose to be heading to the OBX tonight. Me Ma Evelyn is scheduled to be heading home this afternoon at 2pm and I saw here at the nursing home last night and believe me she is ready to go home. Qualifying for this weeks Nascar stop was rained out so Tony Stewart will start on the pole. Speaking of racing AL is going to take photos at VMS tonight and then he will be on his way to the OBX, the rest of his family is already here. Well I have to run I have lots of things to do. MICKEY

Challenge yourself
Go beyond what you know you can do. And just like that, you'll know you can do more.

Go beyond again, and again. Grow past the limitations you've imagined, a little bit at a time.

Challenge yourself, and then do what it takes to meet the challenge. As you feel your strength increasing, resolve to add to it through your own efforts.

The way to have real confidence is to build it. Every day is your opportunity to make yourself more confident, competent and effective.

The skills and abilities that seem out of reach are really just a number of steps away. Challenge yourself toward them, and with each effort you move closer.

Push yourself beyond the familiar, beyond the comfortable, and into a higher level of ability. Feel the unique joy of breaking through your limitations again and again.

I WILL BE HEADING TO THE OBX AFTER WORK, ME MA EVELYN COMING HOME TOMORROW

Well I will be heading down to the OBX after work today for vacation and there will be allot of fellow bloggers joining me down there as well over the next 10 days. Also Scott and his family will be arriving from Georgia tonight on the OBX from Georgia. It's hard to believe its been about a year since last years vacation but I not complaining. Also tomorrow Me Ma Evelyn will be coming home tomorrow from the nursing home that she has been in the last several months which is very good news. Yesterday was very bad day for celebrities with the deaths of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series will be at New Hampshire this weekend and the Indy Car Series will be at the Richmond International Raceway. I saw the Indy Cars run at RIR a few years back and those cars are moving when the go around RIR. The water temperature at the beach yesterday was 76 degrees which is like bath water. MICKEY

While migraines and their causes vary from person to person, researchers have identified some common triggers.

-Too much sleep, or not enough shut-eye.
-Missing meals.
-Overstimulated senses, including noises that are too loud, scents that are too strong, or lights that are too bright.
-Hormonal changes.
-Stress.
-Changes in the weather.
-Drinking red wine or changes in caffeine intake.
-Aspartame, an artificial sweetener.
-Food additives such as tyramine, monosodium glutamate (MSG) or nitrates.

UV Protection: Studies show that UV radiation can accelerate the development of cataracts. The bright sun can cause pinguecula and pterygium-benign growths on the surface of the eye. UV radiation can cause cancer of the eyelids and the skin surrounding the eyes. UV radiation can also cause photokeratitis, a temporary but painful burn on the cornea, the clear dome-like structure on the front part of the eye. Photokeratitis often occurs while water or snow skiing without sun protection. Studies also show that long-term exposure to the sun's harmful rays may contribute to the development of macular degeneration. At the very least, you should look for sunglasses that block at least 99% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation, and screen out 75-90% of visible light.

LSU WINS CWS, CH PICKS UP 2 WINS

The LSU Tigers beat the Texas Longhorns last night 11-4 to win the College Baseball World Series, I didn't get to see the game last night but after seeing all the team in the CWS I thought LSU was the best team. Our Appomattox League team picked up two wins last night over Petersburg 10-0 and 16-6, the 2nd game of the night 7-6 before we got 9 runs in the bottom of the 4th. This Petersburg team was better than there high school team but they had at least 3 kids who play for private schools. My back is a bit sore this morning for some reason, I hoping that it will loosen once I get to work. I got a new hair cut clipper earlier this week and got to use it for the 1st time yesterday and I think it might be the best one that I have had, that thing really cuts fast. I talked to fellow blogger Scott yesterday and he is ready to go to the beach, he said he had to pick Scottie up around Noon from wrestling camp and then he will be on his way to the OBX. It is going to be pretty warm the next two days here in CH with highs in the mid 90's. MICKEY

Things You Won't Give Up
Do you feel like you can't live without your chocolate? If there are foods you won't give up, enjoy them in smaller amounts. Buy one tiny high quality piece of candy and enjoy it, but don't buy a bag full of snacks to take with you. Limit other treats or favorite foods that aren't healthy, maybe let yourself eat them one time per month, or search for healthier versions at natural foods markets.

When shopping for sunglasses, many people tend to look at fashion first, rather than function. While it's always fun to pop on a fresh pair of uber-cool shades, keep in mind the most important reason for wearing them in the first place: to protect your eyes. Ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) from the sun can be very dangerous, sometimes causing irreversible damage to our vision. To properly shield your eyes, you must wear the right type of sunglasses, since wearing the wrong type can cause more damage than wearing no glasses at all.(Tinted glasses lacking UV protection may cause more harm to the eyes than wearing no glasses.) With that in mind, here are a few things to look for while shopping for those new shades.

APPOMATTOX LEAGUE ACTION TONIGHT

Our Appomattox League team will be back in action tonight at home against Petersburg at 6pm. This is the 1st time Petersburg has had a team in the league in about 4 years so you never know what type of team they are going to show up with. In the CWS last night Texas beat LSU 5-1 to stay alive in the best of 3 series, they will play the deciding game tonight with the winner being the best team in college baseball. Well I officially started getting ready to go to the beach last night, I started getting all my clothes ready to put in suitcase. It was announced yesterday that the Chevrolet dealership in Colonial Heights was one of the dealerships General Motors has decided to close, they also lost the Cadillac dealership to another dealer. My sinuses have been acting up the last couple of days, also the mold spores are very high as well. MICKEY

If you eat a lot of fast food, you have found out how difficult it is to feel good and stay healthy. Some places have added salads and some better choices, but it really isn't a good way to eat. Keep fast food dining to a minimum, don't go with the super sizes and choose places that offer more fresh ingredients.

Don't Skip Meals
If you skip breakfast, you may find that you lose energy by midmorning. Rather than skipping breakfast completely, split it in half. Eat a small breakfast early, such as an egg, small serving of oatmeal, or a slice of whole grain bread. Have a small snack on hand such as raisins and 10 or 12 almonds to eat at midmorning. This split breakfast is a much better solution than reaching for coffee and candy bars to perk yourself up.

Solid recovery
Each setback provides an opportunity to recover. And each time you recover, you grow stronger.

The route to your goal is not a straight line. There will be many times along the way when you find yourself off course.

When that happens, it can seem like your destination is unreachable. Doubt, fear and apathy will take hold if you let them.

The key is not to let them. For as hopeless as the situation may feel, there are actions you can take that will enable you to quickly get back on track.

Much of the substance of achievement is in becoming skilled at making a quick and solid recovery. Each setback gives you the chance to practice and strengthen and refine that valuable skill.

Know that whatever has slowed you down can provide you with a way to move more effectively forward. Quickly get back up, and feel the new strength you've gained.

CH SPLITS IN APPOMATTOX LEAGUE ACTION, LSU WINS GAME 1

Last night our Appomattox League team split a double header with Prince George, we won the the 1st game 13-2 and lost the 2nd game 5-2. In the 2nd game we only got 1 hit and PG only got 2 but we had a few to many walks, we will return to action tomorrow night at home against Petersburg. In the CWS last night LSU beat Texas 7-6 in 11 innings to take 1-0 series lead, they will play game 2 of the series tonight. Well I hope everybody is ready to go to the beach because I sure am, I haven't got everything packed up yet like Scott though. Enjoy the mild temperatures today because the temps will be on the rise into the low 90's after todays high in the mid 80's and with the temp rise the humidity will be climbing as well. MICKEY

Healthy Foods for Snackers
If you are an emotional eater, keep the junk food like potato chips, tortilla chips, ice cream, and candy out of the house. Keep healthy snacks like fruits, crunchy vegetables with dips, or nuts handy. If you absolutely feel the need for a treat, then purchase a small piece of high quality chocolate or your favorite treat and enjoy it, just don't buy any to bring home.

The same tips are helpful for those who enjoy TV snacking at home. If you don't want to give up nibbling while watching your shows, keep low calorie foods close by, because it is very easy to eat too much when you are entranced by your favorite drama, football game or cooking show. Eat crisp raw vegetables with your dip instead of greasy chips.
