ECU HAS A GOOD DAY

The ECU baseball team came out swinging last night enroute to a 13-3 win over Tulane last night. In the game there were 6 HR's and 4 of those were by the Pirates, the Pirates also had 16 hits in the victory. For a game in which there were 16 runs scored it was a very fast game, it only took 2 hours and 8 minutes to finish the game. The Pirates stadium is a 1st class facility. We also saw the ECU softball team complete a DH sweep of Southern Miss in 9 innings 3-2, they had already won the first game of the day 4-3. The Pirates won both there games on there final at bat of each game. In all it was a pretty good day for ECU and it was a great day weather wise to watch both games. The NY Rangers are finished, they were knocked out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Devils yesterday, the Rangers did not win a single game in the series. I guess I will continue to follow the playoffs with no rooting interest, maybe I will start rooting for all the underdogs that are left. Martin Truex Jr won yesterdays Busch race at Talladega and E Sadler is on the pole for todays Nextel Cup race today, next week both series head to Richmond. I have posted a couple of photos of Tony Stewart upside down during the Busch race yesterday, the photos are from the AP WIRE. Also I understand that a car got upside down at the Virginia Motor Speedway last night, maybe AL has a photo of that. MICKEY

Devil Rays Fall to Nats

The Devil Rays took it on the chin today, as they were out slugged by the Nationals 14-12. Andrew turned in another good day for the Rays. He was 3 for 3, scored 3 runs, had 2 RBIs and HR. Defensively he recorded 2 putouts (a 6-U putout at short and 4-3 putout at first). The Devil Rays look to get back in the win column on Wed, May 3 (6 PM), as they entertain the Astros.

The picutre to the left was taken at last Sundays game courtesy of Uncle Al . We're still in negotiations, but expect to see him out at the park when the Devil Rays clash with the Braves in the final game of the season.

I AM HEADING TO ECU TODAY

I will be heading down to ECU today to see the Pirates play Tulane in baseball tonight at 6pm, in the 1st game of the series last night Tulane beat ECU 9-5. This will be the 1st baseball game that I have ever been to at ECU but I have seen many Pirate football games over the years. The baseball stadium is very nice at ECU and it should be pretty good game tonight. Andrew's LL team will try to make it two straight today when they play the Nationals at noon today on Ironbridge field #3, I heard they were running the bases better on tuesday. Qualifying is set for today for sundays Nextel Cup race at Talladega, I am sure it is going to be a wild race on sunday. I thought I would post another old photo and it's of me playing wiffle ball at the beach in 1972 and this photo was taken long before the Wiffle Ball Hall Fame controversy. Also today the NY Rangers are in a most win situation down 3-0 to the Devils, I have to say it doesn't look good for the Rangers. MICKEY

The Colonials next game is tuesday at 4:30pm against Dinwiddie at Shepherd Stadium. Andrew's LL team will be back in action saturday at 12:00pm against the Nationals on Ironbridge field #3. The NY Rangers return to the NHL playoffs appears to be about over the Rangers are now down 3-0 to the Devils and the Rangers offense I think is already on the golf course. Two Happy Devil Rays

Well at least one looks happy in this picture. But, both are happy tonight as Rookie Devil Rays defeated the Rookie Mets 10- 5. After spotting the Mets 4 runs in the top of the first inning, the Rays bats errupted with back to back five run innings (innings 2 and 3). The Mets tacked on a run in the fourth but the game was called in the bottom of the 4th due to rain. The Rays had the bases juiced for #14 when the umpire decided to call the game (needless to say, he was not happy with that decision). Andrew turned in another good game, he continues to flash the leather by diving and knocking down a line that would have obviously gone through the Rays porous outfield to score 3 runs. Instead, the hitter was held to a single and the machine did the rest striking out the next batter leaving 3 Mets stranded to end the 4th. At the plate, Andrew was one for two. He grounded out to the second baseman in the bottom of the first and ripped a single down the third base line in the 3rd. As "Scoop" Mickey pointed out earlier this week, the Devil Rays base running is not the best; otherwise Andrew would've or should've had a double.

Next up for the Devil Rays will be the Nationals. Game time 12:00 Sat @ Field # 3 Ironbridge Park. Andrew said to let him know who's comining so he can leave some tickets for you a Will Call.

IT'S MONDAY AGAIN

It seem like the weekend just flew by and it's monday again. The pollen has been pretty bad and my sinuses are acting up and that makes me feel pretty tired most of the day. I went to Andrew's LL game yesterday and I have to say the Devil Rays looked much better than they did a few weeks ago, they made some good plays in the field and they about 6 to 7 players who hit the ball pretty well. The only problem it looks like they are having is baserunning, it looks like they are listening to the coach to oftern. It looks like it is going to be pretty warm monday and tuesday and then it looks like it is going to cool down a bit for the rest of the week. The TD Knights play at Petersburg this afternoon. The NY Rangers need a win tonight to avoid going down 2 games to none, if they lose tonight I think they could be done. The new hockey teamin Richmond will be announced tuesday at a press confernence at 10:30am at the RC, fellow blogger Gary will be in attendance. MICKEY

SATURDAY WAS A TOTAL WASHOUT

I have to say that if anything was planned outside yesterday that it was rained out. There were no races at VMS and Andrew's LL game was postponed until today at 5:30pm. Dad was going to cut the grass also but the rain got the best of him also, I guess he is going to cut it monday now. They are calling for a chance of rain on tuesday also, lets hope it doesn't and we are able to get the baseball games in. The NY Rangers got pounded in game one of the best of 7 series with the Devils 6-1, they did not play very well at all and Jagr was injured and probably will miss game 2 which is not good for the Rangers. Kevin Harvick won last nights Nextel Cup race at Phoenix making it a weekend sweep for him, Harvick also leads Busch Series point standings and is starting to run a way that. Where was everybody at yesterday on the blog, there sure wasn't much traffic on the blog yesterday. Well it looks like I will be watching tuesday's game with Brian on the other side of the fence. I still maintain that I didn't say anything to warrant my ejection, I have had problems with this guy in the past. I will be able to throw batting practice and hit infield but after that I will be on the other side of the fence. Andrew I will be back uniform for the Thomas Dale game. It doesn't look good for Andrew's LL game today, it's raining pretty hard here in CH this morning and they are calling for t-storms all day an night. The NY Rangers open there run for Lord Stanley's Cup this afternoon against the NJ Devils, go Rangers. The Nextel Cup Series are in Phoenix tonight and Kyle Busch is on the pole and because of the rain it looks like the VMS may have to cancel there races tonight. My day didn't get off to the best start this morning because the donuts from Wal-Mart were not as good as they usually are, they migh have been left over. MICKEY

COLONIALS PICK UP A BIG VICTORY

The CH Colonials baseball team picked up a big victory yesterday defeating a very good Matoaca Warriors team 7-3 in CD action yesterday. The Colonials offense was sparked by two 2 run HR's one by Jonathan Wells and the other by Kyle Mears, also Kenny Stoneback went 2-3 for the Colonials and had 2 RBI's. The Colonials had several big defensive plays in the game but the biggest was a play Andrew Holt made with the infield in knocking down a preventing a run from scoring and keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard that inning. Brett Draper and Nathan Anger did the job on the mound for the Colonials holding the Warriors to just three runs. In a heated discussion with the umpire the usually very calm Mickey Goulder was ejected from the game with 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning and I don't think I said anything that warranted me getting ejected because I was just stating the truth. The Colonials are now in a three way tie for first place in the CD with Matoaca and Dinwiddie at 5-1 in the CD. MICKEY

The nursery rhyme "Ring Around the Rosey" is a rhyme about the plague. Infected people with the plague would get red circular sores ("Ring around the rosey"), these sores would smell very badly so common folks would put flowers on their bodies somewhere (inconspicuously), so that it would cover the smell of the sores ("a pocket full of posies"). Furthermore, people who died from plague would be burned so as to reduce the possible spread of the disease ("ashes, ashes, we all fall down!")

NOT-SO STOOPID FACTZ !!!

Life in the 1500's

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and were still smelling pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the b.o.

Baths equaled a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually loose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water".

Houses had thatched roofs. Thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the pets...dogs, cats and other small animals, mice, rats, bugs lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs," There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. So, they found if they made beds with big posts and hung a sheet over the top, it addressed that problem. Hence those beautiful big 4 poster beds with canopies.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, hence the saying "dirt poor". The wealthy had slate floors which would get slippery in the winter when wet. So they spread thresh on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed at the entry way, hence a "thresh hold".

They cooked in the kitchen in a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They mostly ate vegetables and didn't get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been in there for a month. Hence the rhyme: peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork and would feel really special when that happened. When company came over, they would bring out some bacon and hang it to show it off. It was a sign of wealth and that a man "could really bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with a high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food. This happened most often with tomatoes, so they stopped eating tomatoes... for 400 years. Most people didn't have pewter plates, but had trenchers - a piece of wood with the middle scooped out like a bowl. Trencher were never washed and a lot of times worms got into the wood. After eating off wormy trenchers, they would get "trench mouth."

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the "upper crust".

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake".

England is old and small and they started running out of places to bury people. So, they would dig up coffins and would take their bones to a house and reuse the grave. In reopening these coffins, one out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on their wrist and lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell. Hence on the "graveyard shift" they would know that someone was "saved by the bell" or he was a "dead ringer".

COLONIALS 6 HOPEWELL 0

The CH Colonials defeated the Hopewell Blue Devils 6-0 in CD play yesterday behind Nathan Anger's complete game 1 hitter. The Colonials also got stellar defensive performances from Kenny Stoneback (8 putouts) and Andrew Holt (6 putouts), and offensively Kyle Mears hit a 2 run HR for the Colonials. The Colonials have a big matchup Matoaca thursday night 6pm at Shepherd Stadium. Matoaca defeated Dinwiddie last night 5-1 to improve to 5-0 in the CD, the Colonials are 4-1 in the CD and 8-3 overall. Thomas Dale returns to action today at Manchester. Andrew's LL team lost a tough one last night in the last inning, I understand Andrew did have a pretty game though. What happened to all the Stupid Facts Scott, we miss them. The NY Rangers lost again last night and dropped from a #3 seed to a #6 seed for the playoffs and will play the NJ Devils in the 1st round, the Rangers are not playing well going into the playoffs which could lead to an early exit. COLONIALS VISIT HOPEWELL TODAY

The CH Colonials baseball team will travel to Hopewell today for 5pm game against the Blue Devils, the Colonials are 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the CD. I think Al might be at tonight's game so we should have some action shots of the game. The only other game in the CD today is a big matchup between Dinwiddie and Matoaca both teams are 4-0 in the CD and the game will be played at Matoaca. The NHL regular season ends tonight and with a win the NY Rangers will be a #3 seed in the playoffs, either way the Rangers will be in the playoffs for the 1st time since 1995 I believe. We did get to hit the cage last night and all the baseballs were very wet, which in turn made the baseball heavy and made my arm sore this morning. Also Andrews LL team the Devil Rays will be in action tonight at 6pm on Ironbridge field #3 they will play the Diamondbacks. THERE WILL BE NO MORE STOOPID FACTZ UNTIL THE CULPRIT STEPS UP AND ADMITS HIS WRONG DOING !

Go Karts.Hmmmmmmm

Well my sister called and told me that the Heights has a putt putt and go kart track now and it made me remember that I forgot to give you the infamous story of my trip with mick and Al to hampton and the go-karts. We were headed to Langley for the Busch race and meet up with David Staples. We had time to kill and since the competitive juices were flowing we went go-karting. It is a fairly easy track to maneuver except for one lone driver. As we were given the one lap to go Mick looked back to see where I was and make sure I wasnt gonna rattle his cage and when he did ...Trouble turn 2 M Goulder slams into the tire barriers...And when he did leftover rain water and mud went everywhere. All over his shirt and shorts. We all had to stop b/c we were laughing so hard we couldnt see. But dont worry Mickey was given a new kart and given one extra lap. Once that was over he came by and smiled and there was mud on his teeth. And not to mention over his Hobie shark shirt. I cant believe i remember the shirt. What a fun day!! I also did not get tossed and that makes one of only 3 tracks in virgina I can still run. To make matters worse Mickey said he knew a short cut coming home and we did a 2 hour circle and landed right back at J Clyde Morris Blvd still 2 hours from home. Way to Mick..Still wouldnt trade it for anything. great memories..help me out Al...

IT'S MONDAY AGAIN

Well another weekend has come and gone and now it's back to work for another week, at least for most of us, there are few bloggers who have xtra day this year though. It looks like we might get a little more rain today which would make it 4 days in a row some rain, we still need more though although allot more things have started turning green the last few days. I hope everybody had an nice Easter, I ate lunch at Me MA Ruth's and dinner Me Ma Evelyn's needless to say I had to much to eat between the two. The Colonials will be back in action tuesday at 5pm at Hopewell. I have posted an old photo of myself wearing an old Green Bay Packers hat, I think I was in middle school at the time of the photo and I think the hat might be to big for my head. MICKEY

HAPPY EASTER

I just thought I would wish everyone a HAPPY EASTER this morning, so far it's pretty nice here in CH even though it suppose to rain later today and monday. It looks like the Richmond Riverdogs have played there final game in there history last night, even thought the Dogs won 9-3 the Motor City Mechanics also won 5-1 over Port Huron to claim the final playoff spot. The Dogs will moving to Hoffman Estates, Illinois and changing there name to the Chicago Hounds next season, Hoffman Estates is a suburb of Chicago. It appears Richmond will have a hockey team in the SPHL next season and the will be known as the Richmond Boarders if all goes correctly, former Renegade owner Alan Harvie will own the team. Kevin Harvick won yesterday's Busch race at Nashville and with the win becomes the 7th different winner in the first seven races this season. In case some of you missed it we have few new bloggers that have joined us this week, A.G. and Vince have made some comments already and my mom's sister has also become a member but has not posted anything yet though. We are always looking for new members. Andrew's LL team will be in action tuesday night at 6pm at Ironbridge Park on field #3. MICKEY

DOGS LOSE AND IT WAS A STORMY NIGHT AND MORNING IN CH

The Richmond Riverdogs lost last night to Quad City 3-2 in Illinois, they gave up the game winning goal in the final 3 minutes of the game. The Dogs still have one shot left to make the pllayoffs, they have to beat Missouri tonight and Motor City has to lose to Port Huron for them to make the playoffs, Motor City lost 5-1 last night to Port Huron. The NHL regular season ends tuesday night and I am hoping the NY Rangers will have a long run thru the playoffs. It has been a very stormy night and morning here in CH, the storms started last night about 10pm and we have had some on and off t-storms thru 8am this morning, it does look like it trying to clear off now though. I forgot to tell everbody about the Mega Millions joackpot yesterday it was worth $220Million but nobody won the jackpot so tuesday drwaing should be worth about $265million. I found this picture on the ECU messgeboard and I thought it was pretty funny. MICKEY

TUXEDO'S FOR WEDDING

I understand that Al has picked out his tuxedo's for his and Donna's wedding and that he has decided to go with a retro tuxedo that can found in this photo. At first I thought Al was joking about the green tux but I think it will work as long as we get a top hat and a cane to cane to with it, I think George may have some reservations about wearing a green tux though. I am glad that is friday it has been a very long week and my arm is very sore, I just need a little rest. The pollen around is also very bad, we did get a bit of rain in a surprise thunderstorm but I think all that did was stir up the pollen. The Riverdogs have a very big game tonight in Quad City if they win they have a pretty good shot of making the playoffs, if they lose they are probably done. Kyle Busch got a reckless driving ticket in Henrico wed night near the airport, he was in town for some testing at RIR. Also is appears are softball team will playing much earlier this season in some tournaments so I will have some more aches and pains to complain about. MICKEY

COLONIALS FALL 3-1 TO MATOACA

The Matoaca Warriors defeated the CH Colonials 3-1 in the championship game of the L.C. Bird Spring Tournament. It was a very well played game between to good teams, Brett Draper pitched very well for the Colonials in defeat. The Colonials only had 4 hits offensively and the Warriors defense turned 4 double plays, CH finishes the 1st half of the season at 7-3. The Riverdogs defeated Roanoke last night 5-3 setting up a very big game against Quad City friday night which will go a long way in deciding whether to Dogs make the playoffs. Keith and Andrew went see the UVA baseball team play last night against Longwood at UVA and I am happy to report that the Cavs won the game 6-4. The Nextel Cup Series is off this weeken for Easter. I have posted another old photo of Keith catching a wave on the OBX in the mid 70's. MICKEY
